Proper oil level 3 Years ago
On 10/28/2008 Yamaha sent an email to the Yamaha dealership main office where I work as a salesperson. It stated that 1700 Roadstar oil level is now 3200cc which translates 3 quart & 12 ounces . There is still approx. one quart left in the tranny when the oil is drained. This has been determined when the cases are split for any rebuild of the engine. The level on the dip should be 1 to 2 hash marks at the bottom of the dip, when the engine is warm not hot. This will leave room for expansion and when the engine is hot 6 to 10 hash marks. Somtimes the best tips come from inside the service department. I checked with a 35 year veteran Yamaha mechanic & Chief Technical Advisor at my shop and 1600 Roadies are the same. As told at Yamaha service school when dip says E that means enough .

Be nice to see a copy of that. Shame that wasn't put in the owners manual, would have saved some people alot of grief.

It doesn't sound like the 1600 was included in the email. So I'm still curious as to why Yami decided the oil level needed to be dropped on the 1700 motor.

Musky this has been a debate on and off with dealers and yamaha for years. As Mike the 35 year mechanic and service guru told me he first heard the same info from yamaha service school in 2002 about the 1600 Roadie.

Geysnake as we joke about stuff like this when we find out we say the same thing. Why isn't this in owners manuals or service manuals????????? those *%###@ at Yamaha. But we still love those Roadies. If you ever owened Harleys stuff like this is nothing new. A friend of mine told me his buddie was told from Harley his factory computer would work fine with his aftermarket pipes and h went ridding and the front head pipe glowed red!!!!!!!! Sometimes you can't rely on the comapany to do the rioght thing that's why we have forums like this. The public doesent always get the complete info on many issues but my employment at a Yamaha dealership gives me many sources of info from a wealth of knowledgeable mechanics.

Doomed your right it hasn't changed my love of the bike. I know they all have some kind problems but it would just be better if they all would be up front with it.

3.2 L Hmmmmm.

Could you clarify if that's with or without filter change.

Currently the manual states ...

3.7 L without filter
4.1 L with filter

Thanks.

Either way, that's at least 0.5 L ..... a significant amount. Yamaha needs to find a way to get this info out to not only its dealers.

The only documents I've seen from Yamaha concerning oil level was the tech bulletin addressing SVS, this only applied to the 1700 motors, to my knowledge Yamaha has never deviated from the owners/service manual oil volume relating to the 1600 motors. I have also worked at a Yamaha shop and have had numerous discussions with Yamaha tech support on this topic.

I agree - they should tell owners, if it so!
