I work @ Yamaha dealership in sales. The two chief mecanichs have over 80 years of experience. They have been going to Yamaha school for over 15 yrs and when I told them about the Yamaha computer automatically adjusts to the new set up they couldn't stop laughing. It's not in a service manual, owners manual nor has one Yami teacher ever said that.

Maybe your mecanichs(?) ought to read the Factory Service Manual (LIT-116-21-68) section 7 entitled "Fuel injection system". In this section it shows that practically all EFI conditions that do not involve a defective part are "reinstated" either by turning the switch on and off or cranking and letting it run for a short period and turning it off. I'm sure they have this manual handy and you can read it for yourself.
Aside from all of that as others have said and I have experienced first hand, that is all that is required.

Many of these aftermarket 'fixes' for problems that don't exist remind me of other products that have hit the market in the last few years, like colon cleansers. All they seem to do is lighten the wallet and often end up being nothing more than a pain in the A$$.

Hey Thom you aint a mechanic whats wrong with you your reponse could have read ...well I have been reading for 45 years and ...Coug

Hi Everyone,

I've been reading through these forums trying to find answers to a whole bunch of questions about an Fi 2000 R O2 Mod. I did. You guys have been a tremendous help - thank you. So I decided to sign on.

I have tried a lot of what you all have been dioscussing as far as exhaust, air, and Fuel management, and I have had nothing but problems with the Cobra Fi2000. I have an 08 with O2 sensors - left in circuit. The Cobra would not adjust - puked up a lot of black smoke - will not idle, and just doesn't run right at all. Even on the default settings, it is still way out of whack.

I was experiencing a lot of back firing, popping, etc., before installing the Fi 2000, and have since learned (from you all) that the culprit is the AIS. I thought I hadn't tightened down my pipes enough, so I did re-torque them, too.

Anyway, to make a long story short, Cobra suggested disabling the AIS and them retrying their default settings - NOPE! Still runs lousy. I took off the ground wire - effectively turning off the Fi2000, restarted the bike and presto! My bike runs normally again. I tried it with the AIS active - back-firing, popping, etc., and with it disabled - smooth - no popping, no back-firing. It runs great!

(Most of)You guys say the R* EFI remaps itself - I believe this is true. My bike runs so much better without the Fi 2000 - I sometimes think the two computers were competing, and neither was winning. The Fi2000 is going back, I'm going to permanenetly disable my AIS, and I am back on the road. (I was down for days trying to figure this stuff out.)

Thanks for all your help. I know where to come now when I want to figure something out.

Have an awesome ride!

YRS (Yamaha Road Star) Truly!

For the Cobra or Power Commander to work properly you must unplug the O2 sensors or the computers will work against each other. I had the same problem with my wifes 1300 V-Star until I unplugged the O2's now it runs strong and gets about 52 mpg. I agree that there probably is no need to use a fuel processor on the Roadies unless there are major changes to air.

Thanks for all the information. The dealer that sold me the wrong manual took it back and is sending me the right one. I might add that the mechanics at this dealer appear to have read the manual also, as they agree that if no major modifications are made to the breathing system then the RS computer will adjust itself. Wish my Harley would do that.

Hi Scoop,

I appreciate your feedback, but the Cobra system I bought was the latest one; it works (supposedly) with the O2 sensors in place. It actually has the male and female plugs to put the sensors in the loop, hence the closed loop or "CL" version of the computer.

I have no idea what was wrong, but I think that exactly - the two computers were working against each other. For all I know, I got the one that was supposed to be for an open loop system, or something, but it sure didn't work with my bike, no matter what I tried.

I just filled the tank with mid-grade and went on a 75 mile run - to blow out all the soot - well, she ran fantastic, and I averaged about 50 MPG, too!

Just read your post too, SCUD. You just can't beat the Roadstar! It might not be a Harley, but one more thing I've heard mentioned about the R* is that it is the most customizable bike . . . on the planet! Cool! Luv'in my Ride!

Speaking of manuals, is there a good shop manual around for the '08? I haven't found anything, not even a Clymer.

Ride safe everyone!

Thanks Bud! It's so nice to go riding again. Today was great. I went out for about 75 miles, and she just purred right along.

I really don't think I'm going to have any more problems - after all, it's a Roadstar. I guess they really don't need that much to make them Spot on!

I'm enjoying the ride.

Talk to you later.

Hi TS,

I see that you have removed your AIS. The '08 is different from the '07, (Link to Night Sky Customs - two connectors on the rectifier, etc.) so what did you do with the cables to the rectifier, and the vent lines from the fuel tank? Which kit did you use - I've seen two now; one with the cylinder head plugs and a nipple for the manifold, and one with a plug for the manifold. Is there more info for the '08.

Can you help me? I just plugged the lines, but I want to remove the whole shebang.

Thanks!
