Roadstar engine running weak 2 Years, 7 Months ago
I have a 2001 roadstar 1600 which ran fine when I shut it off the night before the problem. The following day I took it for a ride and the engine felt only half as powerful at crusing speed. The sound from the exhaust is very flat under acceleration, almost muffled, despite the fact that I have straight pipes with no baffles. It rides fine, no backfires, hesitation, or surging. The exhaust also doesn't have the deep throaty growl and heavy output that is normal for the bike.

I thought that it may be fuel-related so I took down the carburetor and went through it completely. It made no change.

I was wondering whether it could be one of the coils, ignition module or other electrical breakdown causing it to run okay, but just very weak.

Any ideas?

Are both exhaust pipes equally hot to the touch after about 1 minute after startup?

Welcome to you and your first post.

Check your plugs as well. I'm guessing some plugs might be fouled.
