Engine Codes for 2008 FI Roadstar? 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hey guys, New to the board here.

I bought a 2008 Road Star S with the new FI motor. I just recently installed the Cobra Speedster Slashdown pipes. When I placed the order I ordered the pipes for the '08 bike that have the 02 bungs welded in already. Well when i got the pipes and had them half way installed I realised they sent me the wrong pipes. So I called Yamaha and they said I could unplug the o2 sensors as long as I used an "open loop" fuel programmer. So with that I bought the Cobra Fi2000 EFI tuner module. Bike runs great, I have a little tuning to do to get rid of all the pops.

So now that you have the history of the bike. I go out today and ride 150 miles, well about 130 miles into the ride, I am cruising down the interestate at about 85 (flow of traffic) and the check engine light comes on. I make it home and find engine codes 68 and 24. Does anyone have a list of Codes for reference.

Thanks,

1. I'd be surprised that Yamaha told you to unplug the 02 sensors. I hope it wasn't the guys installing the pipes. And, if it was. I hope they're covering your voided warranty...
2. And, whoever did install your pipes could have saved you a few hundred $$$ by drilling a hole and welding on a stainless nut on each side. That's all a "bung" is...

I have a link to the codes. I'll see if I can hunt it down for you.

Welcome to the site. You'll get the straight scoop here on just about everything R*.

I actually installed the pipes myself. I actually spoke to the guys at cobra, they told me it would work which is why I bought the open loop system. So now that I have thrown two codes I have voided my warranty on the bike??? Dang I wish I would have found this place before I spend 750 on pipes and EFI Controller.

On a side note, I love the pipes, they sound awesome even with the baffels in. Pipe seems to be running fine, just still needs a few tweaks and hopefully it will be even better. I will keep an eye out for the code list. Thanks.

Dempsy:

Only a Yamaha dealer can void your warranty. But, you and I both know it's a risk of removing the oxygen sensors and run wide-open. We both have the first year of FI. Who knows what that damage that might cause.

I did the same thing. Ordered pipes without the bungs. But, I ran them down to a local muffler shop and had bungs installed before I put the pipes on. $40.00 and not a minutes worry since. And, didn't have to buy the PCIII. Runs strong, even with an open intake.

We have folks on the site that have run without 02 sensors and PCIII without issue. While that's ok, you do run that risk.

Personally, I'd pull the pipes off and do it right. But, that's just me.

Also, did you pull off the AIS system? If not, you're going to get a lot of backfiring on decel.

Again, welcome to the site. We'll get you fixed up...

Rich,

I will check on the o2 bungs ASAP. Its not that hard to pull the pipes back off. I guess that means I will need to purchase a differnt EFI tuner. I did not pull the AIS is this something I need to take off? Will this add to the list of things that void warranty?

I guess I have alot of reading to do before I make my next mod. Really wish I would have found this place sooner. Thank you for all the tips.

Dempsey:

I think you'll find that the bike will run perfectly with the new pipes if you do the following things. Some have "over-engineered" a solution for a problem that doesn't exist...

1. Re-install the 02 sensors (I'm betting that is your code issue). Notice #24 in the list below.
2. Remove the AIS system (unless you're in California). We've all done it. I don't think it has much to do with the warranty.
3. Put the PCIII on Ebay and buy some chrome(seriously). Run it without it for a few days. I think you'll see why you don't need it...

Here's a short list. I know that there are more, though.

11 Cylinder identification sensor failure
12 Crankshaft position sensor failure
13 Intake pressure sensor failure
14 Intake pressure sensor pipeline failure
15 Throttle position sensor wire disconnected or short-circuited
16 Throttle position sensor stuck
21 Water temperature sensor failure
22 Intake temperature sensor failure
23 Atmospheric pressure sensor failure
24 Oxygen sensor failure
30 Lean angle cut-off switch activated
31 Maximum allowable Oxygen sensor correction level exceeded
32 Oxygen sensor correction level too low
41 Lean angle cut-off switch disconnected or short-circuited
42 Vehicle speed sensor or neutral switch failure
43 Monitor voltage -- less than 3v
44 ECU failure

We just put short shots on my Dads 08 today. Welded nuts onto the pipes for the O2 sensors and did the AIS Blockoff. No codes and no backfires. He isn't running any baffles and it sounds awesome and still runs strong. Butt dyno couldn't tell any difference in power.

Well I didn't throw any codes right away. I rode almost 150 miles before the check engine light came on....

A similar thing happened to me when I bought my '08 last summer. V&H said in their catalog that the long shots would fit up through the '08 which was a mistake since at that time they didn't have the O2 sensor bungs. The Yamaha dealer definitely did not suggest removing the sensors and using a PC. We stayed with the stock pipes for awhile and then Speedstar came out with Dragster longs with the sensor mounts. (was tipped off to this by a RSC member). Put them on disabled the AIS, and just cranked up and took off. No problems. I have about 4K on them with no problems and that includes a Speestar/K&N BAK as well. Bike runs great and no need to hassle with a PC.
