Re:Pinging 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Hey Doc,

I am having that pinging noise also at low revs, sounds very steel on steel on my '00 Roadstar. Tonight I get it up on the lift and gently bring the rpm's up until I get the noise to occur. When riding it sounds like it is in the front cylinder, but when on the lift I notice it is in the rear cylinder.

I go and grab my old man's auto stethascope to listen and it is at the base of the rear cyclinder and it sounds like scraping, is this from the gear mentioned earlier or would it actually be a bearing. I have 14,000 plus miles and I am running Castrol Syntec 20-50 with amout a 1/2 quart of Lucas 70 weight added in. Last year I ran 10-40 synthetic with the Lucas and it ran quiet, this year not so much.

Any thoughts?

Never came across that noise so I'm at a lose as to what it can be.

If it occurs at a certain rev it could be someting loose, it vibrating and the noise is being transmitted to the area where you are listening.

At the base of the V is the two cams with the lifters just above them. A bad lifter doesn't make a pinging noise but rather a clicking noise.

My "mechanic" suggested I run 10-40 petroleum based oil instead of the conglomeration I was running...took it out afterwards and I'll be dammed if it didn't quiet the beast down...now it still raps...but the weird noise SEEMS to be gone time will tell...

Thanks for the feedback though Doc,
