A messed up transfer case chain means they forgot to put in the gear lube during the recall, that's the only way I seen one of these fail.

There is only one full size gasket which goes between the transfer case halves, there is also a round sealing washer that goes on the center stud which gets a odd looking nurled nut with a 6mm allen head. The second chrome cover does not have a gasket but it does have a o-ring around the fill port cap and a crush washer on the drain bolt.

Also the middle drive shaft must be removed to replaced the transfer case chain, on the pulley side, a very small and delicate O-ring seals this shaft, it is a common source of gear lube leaks.
