spark plugs 2 Years, 5 Months ago
I had my 07 r* rejetted about 1 month ago at the Yamaha dealer, I was told the gas mileage would change by about 1 or 2 miles less per gallon. The mileage changed a lot, so I went back to the dealer service dept. and told them about it and they pulled the spark plugs to check to see if it was burning lean. the front plugs were good but the back plugs were black, they said the back was burning lean. they put new plugs in and said to run it for awhile and take it back for them to check. What can I expect them to do if it's the same? What can I do to help the situation.

Rejetting shouldn't cause you to lose any mpg, sctnmart, unless you're now running richer than before (which could explain the rear plugs being black). What was the purpose of the rejetting? What other mods do you have on the scoot?

Suggest you find a different dealer. If the plugs are black, the black is carbon, and it comes from too much fuel(rich)not a lack of fuel(lean). If what you need done involves warrenty work then you need the dealer. If what you need done does not involve warrenty work then go to an independant shop. If you have any mechanical ability then do it yourself!

I modified the stock pipes, (stage 2), took the r* in for its 600 mile check up and the service rep suggest that since I modified the pipes the engine would run hotter and recommended to rejet to help keep cool.

There's the problem......service rep. at the most it might have needed a slight adjustment on the pilot screw.

Tell them to put it back to the way it was. Or do it yourself, so you know it's done right. How would it run hotter since you didn't change the air filter to allow more air in? That would cause a lean condition (with a Pipes & filter change.) But, you only did the pipes. Gotta love dealers.

Carb Theory 101

The link above will bring you to a good article on carbs. Easy to read and understand. Helped me get a grip on carb circuits and throttle position.

The Roadie PMS (or Pilot Mixture Screw) will make the air/fuel richer when you turn it out and leaner when you turn it in...opposite what is said in the article in the second section on the Honda carb setup.
