Clutch Clunk 5 Years, 1 Month ago  
I noticed something tonight that concerned me. I replaced the clutch cable with a braided SS one (Yami brand) and set it up and adjusted it per Tech Tips with the nickels worth of play & all. But when I have it in neutral and then put it into first, it 'clunks' and lurches forward just a little bit, like the clutch isn;t fully disengaged. But after it clunks & moves, it doesnt want to roll forward, it jsut acts like it normally would in first gear with the clutch disengaged.

ALSO...maybe I just never noticed this before, but should the bike roll back and forth when in gear with the clutch depressed? Mine doesn't...goes forward and back about 6 inches, but then won't roll any more when I push. It's fine in neutral, though.

I converted from the heel/toe shifter to the single front arm shifter...had to lengthen the linkage a bit to keep it from hitting the engine case, but that seems fine...maybe a little too much play in the shifter before engaging.

Ive tried moving the linkage into the clutch by hand, but the pedal seems to have the full range of motion, as does the linkage the clutch cable attaches to.

Am I just missing a simple adjustment here? The bike only has 4500 miles on it...

I've learned to take any adjustment / setting recommendations as just a starting point. These bike are all individuals. Try adjusting the clutch first.<br><br>Post edited by: Musky, at: 2007/04/03 22:14

Did you adjust the lever at the engine casing?

You need to take all the play out of the clutch and make sure the lever is 1.25 &quot; from the cable holder.

If you have not taken all the free play out of the clutch you won't be able to adjust it enough at the clutch lever or at the downtube.

Thanks, Doc! I went out and tightened things up a bit at the lever and adjusted the shift linkage length (another issue) and it seems a little better, but I'll adjust the cable and casing linkage (using the splines, I imagine) per your specs tomorrow.

I adjusted the clutch cable so it was tight as a drum, and have far less than 1.25&quot; between the lever and the holder (pics attached). The pic of the adjuster wheel is after tightening it up for the test.

So, do I need to loosen the cable as much as possible, remove it from the linkage at the engine casing, then adjust the lever at the engine casing by removing the lever, rotating the lever back on the splines, then reattach and adjust the cable from there to get the 1.25&quot;?

That could be your problem as the clutch does not get pulled enough before you run out of room.

Yes. That will give you the ball-park setting and then you use the handlebar and downtube adjusters to fine tune it.

I don't know if you took the rear shifter lever off at the engine but if you did make sure that's also on correctly. For stock setup just make sure the dot on the splined shifter shaft lands up between the split on the shifter lever. If you don't have the stock setup then make sure the front and rear shifter rods are fairly parallel.

To the best of my knowledge, the shifter is all stock. I did so much to the bike recently, I honestly don't remember if I took the linkage off the engine casing when I changed to the single shifter and stainless cable, but I very well might have.

I looked at the shifter stem with the splines, but didn't see a dot on top of it. Once I get the linkage off, maybe it's on the splines somewhere...? I'll figure it out eventually...that's half the fun... ... thanks again for your help and I'll let you know how it turns out!

Not sure about your other symptoms, but, I used to have problems with the clunk.

When these engines are cold, it helps to pump the clutch lever two or three times before kicking it into gear. I gets the oil flowing through the plates and makes it operate smoothly.

Thanks, as a matter of fact, it did help! I adjusted the clutch and it was much better, but after using your suggestion it got better yet. Thanks!
