Re:Mobil 1 gold top 5 Years, 1 Month ago
Well, let me wade in here and assist you guys at flogging the dead horse a wee bit more. I've been using Mobil1 15w/50 synthetic for about ten years now and this time period encompasses a boat load of bikes, cars, atv's, boats, mowers(yeah thats right, I put it in my freakin lawn tractor and log splitter too). I'm a pretty fair grease monkey and do almost all my own vehicle repair and tweeks and all my engines stay clean internally and have not shown signs of metal to metal type wear in the least. Just changed the oil and filter in the '04' Silverado with the silver cap 15w/50 and a Super Tech filter. By the way I was matching up filters in one of my favorite stores(can you guess which one)and I figured out that a filter for a Honda Prelude/Accord fits our bikes. There's just enough clearance to get the filter wrench on it. Its an "ST3593A". I dont recommend anyone try this as I'm still in the alpha testing phase. Twice the size of the spec filter so more cooling and better filtering I say but we will see. Man if this post doesn't stir up a shit storm I don't know what its gonna take? Later Gents, God Bless and ride safe!

Post edited by: vickk12785, at: 2007/04/04 06:05

Thanks for info on the filter vick.

With respect to the oil, I believe the issue is ... "Is automobile oil is compatible with a wet clutch and which one is it". It's suspected that the newer oils are too 'slippery' and cause clutch slippage.

I (as have others) have been using Mobil 1 15W50 Red Cap in my R* since 2000 and have not noticed any detrimental effects; however, Red Cap is an older formulation and the SAE classifications have been 'upgraded' since then.

From Mobil's website FAQ.

Why are you reintroducing Mobil 1 15W-50? Have there been any changes to the formulation, or is it identical to the previous product?

Mobil 1 15W-50 is being reintroduced based on popular demand. Mobil 1 15W-50 provides higher viscosity, designed to provide extra protection for performance vehicles and vehicles that operate in severe service, such as towing, hauling and racing. Additionally, Mobil 1 15W-50 contains higher levels of anti-wear (ZDDP or Zinc DialkylDithioPhosphate) that may be required for certain racing applications and camshaft designs. This is a new Mobil 1 15W-50 formulation and is not the same as the product that was marketed a few years ago.

Now that interesting ..... the zinc content has increased.

That also explains the switch or the 15W50 from Red to Gold to Sliver caps. They may have dramatically changed the formulations for each 'cap' rather than just a minor removal or addition of additives.
