JYDD, before you hit the panic button, make sure the oil you're seeing around the pulley isn't simply the result of a careless spill while topping up the oil tank. The oil fill is directly above pulley and any small spill will eventually find its way down to where the shaft comes out of the transfer case - looks like a leak at first glance.

You can do it either way but if you're using a belt tensioner then the specs are different.

If you using the twist method, then it's about 1/4 of a turn (less than 1/2) when it's on the sidestand.

I had this nut come loose on my 01, and the leaking.
You could take the tension off the belt and see if you get any slop in that bearing, I had none.
There should be a splined washer under the nut with a tab bent up to hold the nut tight once it has been torqued.
Check that you have that washer and its in good shape, or replace it.
get a 36mm socket, Loctite, and tighten it back up, bend the tab.
Mine has not leaked a drop in the last 25K miles.

Smell the oil leaking, its 90W transfer grease.
Good Luck and Ride On

A little late, but that front shaft seal was seeping a bit on mine right after I bought it. Same deal. Belt too tight. Relieved some excess tension and not a drip since, some 30,000 miles later.

I have the same problem. I found the large nut to be so loose that if the lock washer had not had the tab bent then the large nut would have come right off. The large nut was so loose it wasn't even finger tight. It looks like the correct torque is 61 ft lb's so I'm thinking I might tighten it as much as I can and see if it stops leaking.

My belt doesn't seem too tight. I can turn it 1/4 turn while it's on the side stand.. I might go down to the local dealership and see how tight the floor model's belt is for comparison.
