Oops, am I gonna pass the emissions inspection??!! 2 Years, 7 Months ago
I bought my bike here in NJ, to register and keep at my 2nd home in AZ. I pulled off the smog crap, and rejetted, drilled the airbox and put in a KN filter, and took the baffles out of the stock pipes. When I initially called AZ DMV, they said I only need a VIN verification. Today they told me that because the bike is a 2003, I will need an emissions test. Do you guys think I will pass??

Hard to say. I'd say put the AIS back in for the inspection, but it was probably tough taking it off of your scoot.

I'm running an 03 with no baffles in the V&H long shots, the bike was rejetted afetr the BAK went on. The air box is stock and I passed here in AZ. Throw on some new plugs and give it a try. Maybe tweek the carb just a bit leaner???, before you hit it.

Good idea, try to pass inspection first. Are the tests done by state run facilities or are independant shops performing them and signing you off? I've heard that in some states, certain independant facilities might be lenient enough to fudge you through. Drop by one of the smaller bike shops and ask what the custom bikes are doing to pass emissions. It may be that you'll need to put the spaghetti back on your bike for the inspection. If so, good luck with those plugs.

If all they do is an emmisions test you might get away with adjusting your pms to the lean side for the inspection. Just return it to it's proper position when done. Disconnect the crankcase vent from the air box and Get it nice and hot before inspection.

Thanks Dave, that's actually the kind of info I was looking for. It's not practical to re-install the smog stuff, remember, I'm in NJ, the bike is in AZ. I only spend a few days at a time out there, don't have a powered shop to work on it, and only have very basic tools with the bike. I did rejet it here in NJ and kept it on the lean side as alot of my riding out there is above 3k feet. I need to turn the PMS "IN" to lean it, correct?

Yes turn it in to lean. Just count the turns so you can put it back and don't get it tested at a shop that is at 3000 ft. We used to do emmission test in Michigan and there are many ways to pass the test. It's all just revenue for the state. MI got fed money for doing it.

Just to be safe, you should turn your screw all the way in and count the number of turns and then lean it out. I only say this because that way, in case you forget how you last adjusted the PMS, you'll always know how to get it back to "normal". Another hard learned lesson for me.
