Roadstar Ecstasy but have a question 7 Years ago
Hi all!

I just got my 05 RoadStar Silverado a week ago and man am I loving it!!!
This is my 4th bike and I have to say this is by far the nicest bike I've ever owned. Also, the rider forums are fantastic! Really great to see this kind of network of riders all helping each other out.

As a newbie, I have a question that may be obvious to everyone. I've noticed that my bike really doesn't like any throttle until after about 2 or 3 minutes of warming up. Any throttle at all causes what I think is carb cough. Even when I've been riding for an hour and stop for 20 mins, the engine cools enough that when I start it up I need to let it run for a minute or two. This is my first big twin, so I'm not sure if it's normal for the bike. Everything is stock at this point.

Any advise?

Thanks!

Most bikes are set up lean from the factory due to EPA mandates. Usually carb cough or backfire through the carb is a sign of a lean condition. Buy a good jet kit with adjustable needle and adjust your PMS(pilot mixture screw) and you won't regret it. Also a high flow air filter & pipes will net you more power & torque. If you like to do your own work on your bike, Get a service manual, a wealth of info on your specific model. You might also need to adjust the duration screw on the carb, too much squirt is in the stock set-up. Anyways, let your bike warm up with the enrichener(not really a choke)full on for 30secs. & then 1/2way in another 30secs.-1min. you should be able to close it and use your throttle. Also when you ride and approach a stop after decel, don't blip your throttle, just let her idle. Good luck, Big Al.

Post edited by: Big Al, at: 2005/05/24 01:12

Big Al is right. Had the same issue with my 2003 and the dealer couldn't fix it, says it was normal. Took me all of 10 minutes of tweaking to make it drivable and when I did the rejet, even better. Get a better air intake kit (I am partial to the MAXFLO, but any of them are better than stock) and with your drilled pipes, I think you will love the performance and sound.

Re:Roadstar Ecstasy but have a question 7 Years ago
the 1600 engine had the cough issue also? I just completed the stage one stock drill job and after cutting the weld with my Dremel as per instructions I fought with the cone for a while. I finally gave up and came up with a much better method. I used a very small cut off wheel(about a 1" diameter} and drilled inside the final pipe about 1.25" deep and the cone just fell out in my hand and the bonus was the final pipe was nice and flush with the baffle plate. Then all I had to do was cut the holes in the baffle plate. She sounds much better but could be a bit louder for my taste though. In the post it said the stage one would offer a significant performance increase and tone but other than the tone I felt no increase in power. Anyone else with the stage one mod notice a little kick in power? I will probably go to stage three but didn't want to do it now cause I'm taking the bike to Tennessee next month and didn't want to be dicking around with rejetting till after I got back to New York. Anyone do the stage 3 and have to rejet or anything? I was wondering what needs to be done to the carb if anything after the stage 3 mod. My 04 Silverado 1700 doesn't seem to run too lean at all after I did the stage one mod. Any help is appreciated from the Gurus. Thanks.Vick
P.S. Helluva job on your Roadie Crash. she's nice.

Thanks Vick ... I am pretty proud of her. First cruiser I have ever owned and I am just stunned how much fun you can have below triple didgit speeds. Of course I am also just stunned what a serious slam to my creidt card a cruiser is as well. One of the guys that works for me said the other day, "looks like you are there, nothing else to do." Apparently the look I gave him was humorous enough to get every other biker there to bust a gut laughing. WE ARE NEVER DONE!!!!

All Roadies have a cough/backfire ... every year. Since these bikes all have their own personality, it seems that some get rid of it easier than others. Mine still on occasion will pop, but 99% of the time she runs like a champ.

With a stage three, I think you would need to do some jet work. Probably not a big jump, but jets and a needle upgrade woudl be in order. It really depends on the air intake system you use. Once you open up the breathing, the entire playing field changes a little.

Post edited by: CRASH, at: 2005/05/25 12:28

Vick;

I did the stage 3 mod to my 04 Silver. Sounds real good. No other mods done. I did notice an increse in power. The bike runs a little lean, but no more so that with stock pipes. I checked my plugs and they were not totally white, and had a little tan mixed in which would suggest a little larger main jet and some other slight adjustments would be right on.

Hi Vick, Crash is correct on this one. You should'nt have to change anything on the carb unless you change your intake side and go with different pipes or stage3 mod on your exhaust...Big Al.

Thanks for the feedback brothers. A few more questions(theres always more when your talkin tech stuff right). You veteran Road* bros all seem to agree on a higher flow breather and jet kit for better performance and to help with the carb cough issue. Is there any one particular intake kit that comes out on top? Seems like the Maxair and BAK are the 2 favorites. I've been warned off the hyperchargers but those things look cool dont they? Does the stage 3 exhaust mod give a substantial gain in decibles over the stage 1 or should I leave well enough alone? Thanks again for all the good input guys. Check out the future Road* owner on the back. Vick

Post edited by: vickk12785, at: 2006/11/27 12:17

You can see in my sig pic I prefer the MAXFLO ... I think it to be the least restrictive kit on teh market, I love the sound of gulping air and I liked/wnated that RETRO look it gives. Reminds me of old Edlebrock intakes on my hotrods.

Can't help on the STAGE 3 mod sound ... my pipes are stock, of course they hang on a wall in my garage since I run RoadHouse Dooleys on the bike!
