loping at slow cruise 7 Years ago
|
|
I have an 04 midnight. I have installed a set of hard krome long straights and a maxxiar filter. The jetting is a 195 main and a 40 pilot. she runs very nicely throughout the range but after i come to a cruise situation where i am just barely touching the throttle... She lopes erraticly and jumps . Just a touch, nay, a hair more of the throttle and she is too smooth. if i let off any at all she backs off. i have tried various pilots and an infinite amount of adjusting on the pms. NO CHANGE... I have resorted to trying to adjust the throttle position switch but havent made it much better. No matter what it stays the same not withstanding the obvious changes in performace due to the fuel mix. Loping while she idles is great but while im in slow traffic at a steady speed is unbearable... PLEASE HELP~!!!

When warm, if the engine lopes then you have the idle down to low.
The R* idles at around 900 rpm at which one would probably think it's ideling too fast.

thanks Doc for replying to my post so quickly..
This lope that i am describing, however, may better be described as almost an off-firing of the 2 cylinders... almost a popping but not quite(i know that sounds wierd)...for instance it idles smoothly (lopes a bit...but smoothly considering shes a single pin twin) but if i try to ever so gently speed up the idle theres a roughness that occures and gets to the point of almost a miss.. then with a little more throttle it suddelny smooths out again like someone hit a switch.. i am not trying to get the idle smoothed( i love her idle) but when trying to maintain a steady speed and having to use almost no throttle(say while on the highway at 55 mph level ground)the thing lurches back and forth and going to a lower gear only magnifies it... it sounds like a v8 that is running a huge cam and one is trying to street her ... When i am accelerating it doesent happen, but once leveled off and crusing she wants to hit... OFF... then with only a tiny bit of throttle she suddenly gets smooth(as if by magic) this causes me to break out of my target speed however and i have to reduce throttle once again and it starts the loping again...very rough on my tranny and driveline...I wish i could better word the problem so as to not cause a misdiagnosis... Could it possibly be my valve adjustment?? I mentioned the ilde before only to say that if i speed it up a lil(say 3/4 turn of the idle screw) it does this too and a lil more wham smooth as silk, like a light switch

I'm no mechanic so hopefully some will 'butt' in.
Try also posting on the R* forum as there is a wealth of info there.
The 04's have some problems with the rear cylinder valves. Maybe yours is one of these.

Thanks Doc
i did try the idle up you suggested and it covered the lope some..
i also took the carb off AGAIN for a thorough inspection and cleaning...
all was fine untill i discovered that the starter jet was a dud..
obviously from the factory it came with no orifice, yeah i typed right NO HOLE AT ALL...so i went to the hardware store and got the very smallest bit i could and made one and hopefully it will make some difference till i can order a new one.
the bit was a .0400, and who knows how that will equate to jet sizes.
i pulled the plugs and the front cylinder plugs were white and new looking while the rear were black as coal so i got a bottle of techron and an going to start using 87 octane fuel instead of 93. Just something i have read on here and not sure why it would help but cand hurt so?? anyway thanks again for the replies and hopefully i will be able to help someone on here in the future...
ride well, Warthog

wel i have found that my drill bit is somewhat bigger than a #60 and according to the factory manual the starter jet should be a #52... Today i poured about half a bottle of techron in a full tank of premium fueal and ran the tank out...
I was aobut to praise god that it was cured untill i let her set for about 45 mins and than it was misfiring on the rear hole again untill i got her warm (say about 10 miles mountain style) then smoothness again that is untill ifill the tank with regular gas and then she had the miss but just barely... i am realy startin to belive that a valve(s) are sticking....it could be that i just need to get the right starter jet but i belive not.. so i am now searching for a way to verify the "sticky valve" or not... i have been perusing as many posts as i have had time for and havent looked at all the articlesyet but that is my progress so far... ill keep moanin till she is right

well i have submitted that the "starterjet" in my carb has no hole..
The factory manual says it should be a #52...
However after talking today to a yami tech i have found out the following...
1) yamahe did away with the starter circut and none of the newer carbs should have an actual jet here just a plug that looks like a jet..
2)i was informed that using a speedstar jst kit is usless and that i should just get a dynojet stage 1 kit and i would be done with the matter...
3) if i had a sticking valve i would loose that cylinder completly and contrary to what i may have read on the internet the rear valves are not a problem as far as sticking is concerned on these engines...
4) dont even expect your dealer mechanics to even try to be helpful
oh well i suppose ill go and get the dynojet kit and see if that helps..
more on this later
