I had a problem last year with my transmission getting stuck in gear. I took it back to the dealer that did the transmission recall several years ago, in case it was something to do with that. It ended up being a broken shift mechanism spring behind the side cover. Despite my bike being a '00 model, and the broken part having nothing to do with the recall, Yamaha provided the part for free & I just had to pay about $85 labor (which I thought was very reasonable). The service manager had no problem using the Purolator PureOne filter I provided to change the oil, but didn't want to use the Shell Rotella T 5W-40 synthetic I use. I insisted & he called Yamaha technical support to see if they thought it would hurt anything. They said it was ok to use & actually thought it was a great oil for our bikes (although they still "recommended" their YamaLube, I'm sure from a purely profitable standpoint).

That's funny, when I first got mine a few years ago. My dealer "recommened" amsoil product. I have been using it ever since. Except the last oil change when I couldnt find any, I started using Royal Purple again. The bike seems quicker and better gas mileage with the stuff. The dealer didnt like they said. oh well...I used to race with it. Best stuff I ever used.

I almost bought a couple of cases of Royal Purple very cheap when AutoZone was closing it out, but stuck with my Rotella. I did put Royal Purple in my transfer case the last time I serviced it. Alot of guys I know that race dirt track cars swear by that brand.

Has anybody ever heard of Mobil 1 V-Twin synthetic oil screwing up the clutch on a Roady? A buddy of mine had a dealer tell him it was toooooo slick for the clutch linings. Thoughts?

When I first went to synthetic oil my clutch which was already weak did slip. I changed the clutch pressure plate to the Barnett SR2 and have never had a problem since. Most people are running synthetic in their bike! And alot of us guys have changed out our clutch pressure plate. I would recommend your friend change out the pressure plate spring set up and leave the synthetic oil in the bike and continue to run synthetic oil.

Dealers will tell you lots of things to keep you coming back to them to spend your hard earned money!!

All I've ever run is the Mobil 1 V-Twin. I mean, it says right on it "made for wet clutch applications"...it's JASO/MA rated...no friction modifiers...what's the problem, Mr. Dealer? That they sell it at Wal Mart for $8 a quart?

Actually, the Wally World near me stopped carrying the V-Twin and have the synth Mobil 1 "GT" or "Racing" oil instead. Still JASO/MA, still says designed for wet clutches...only difference is that it's 10W40 instead of 20W50. If I can't find anyone else in town that sells the V-Twin, I might give to GT stuff a try next time...

Hey Roadkill, Autozone still carries the Mobil 1 V-twin. I called them a couple of weeks ago, of course it's $9.50 a quart ! Also figured out my carb problem, had a leak at the carb boot, manifold side. Your jet settings are close
to dead on. I've got my needle on 4th clip until I get a plug reading.
Thanks again,
Chris

If it's made for wet clutch use, they did not add what would make it slip. Amsoil was best I have run. Mobile V twin at Wal Mart now less cash than Autozone. FYI. The Mobile M1 110 Oil filter fits and I would run 6K like that no problem maybe even push 8 depending on how I rode and what I did with it and how it looked. I used to own a Class 8 Truck and Truck driver swear by Shell Rotella for use in certain engines, I used Mobile Delvac just because Caterpillars run better with that in it.

The dealer will always swear by Yamalube, I am sure they have to sell so much of it. Yamaha will always recommend it. Just know that someone else makes it. I used to PU at a place that packaged oil. The same oil squirted into about 12 different brand bottles, then they split up and additives went in. The only difference. Some truckdriver somewhere knows what base yamalube is from. It's not high dollar you can be sure of that.

And as a side note, Cambell's soup also packages store brand soups, and I won't eat a Hostess product after walking through the factory in TN. I never saw so many overflowing mouse traps and spiders in webs above the food lines.

I've been using it for the past two years and haven't had an issue. The guys at the local dealer suggest I use yama-lube;so I did try it once and immediately switched back as i then found my bike not "clutching" properly. Never had an issue with mobile 1
