What's that strange ticking? 2 Years, 3 Months ago
|

So I changed the plugs out and went for a quick ride and went through the gears pretty hard. Acouple of days later I got back on and noticed I now hve this ticking noise. I only hear it in the first 3 gears, but that is because of wind noise,I think. It seems to be comming from the right hand side. Definately engine, increases with RPM's. Plug wires are on. Helllp!

Are you sure the plug wires are on tight? Can you snoop around while the bike is idling on its stand and still hear it?

A couple of easy things to check: A loose plug; Some compression could be leaking. Also, to check for a spark loss thru the wires, observe the bike running in the dark and look for an arc from the plug wire to a part on the bike. If the wires are old, working with them can cause a small crack in the boot or the wire and this could cause an arc. Electricity is like water it’s going to find the least restrictive path.

Check the nuts that hold your pipes to the heads they may be loose. An exhaust leak will give you a ticking sound. I know I lost a nut on mine last weekend. I thought the valves had loosed up until I lost the nut and it started backfiring on decel at 70 mph. First sign of an exhaust leak I thought I had blown a gasket. Got home and looked and the rear nut on the front pipe was gone. Needles to say I took all the OEM nuts off and put metal self locking nuts on instead. Idles fine now NO ticking and runs much smoother.

Thanks Curt, I guess I was emailing you as you were responding here. I hope to get a chance to tinker a little tomorrow. Not seeing any arcing in the dark, I'll check for exhost leak and plug tightness. I know i am full of dumb questions but how can I adjust idle and/or other carb adjustments with the engine running or is that not how it is done. I wish I knew of someone in the area so i could get another opinion of the way my scooter is running. I,d like to have something to compare it to so i would know if i even have a problem.

I guess it would help to give a hint as to where "the area" is. I am in the east Houston,/ Baytown, Tx. area.

For idle adjustments, there's a black knurled knob sticking out near the bottom of your air cleaner and a bit to the right. Turning it clockwise increases idle speed, and counter-clockwise, naturally, decreases idle. It takes a little effort to turn, so turn it a little at a time and you'll hear the idle increasing a second or two after the turn. The idle should be anywhere between, oh, 700-900 rpm, if you have a tach handy.

I got to thinking after my last post and went back and checked a little farther. I think it is the speedometer assembly. I recalled seeing a rubber grommit in the tool pouch. Does that grommit go in the opening where the key comes through the assembly. It seems to reduce the noise when I push against the assembly where the hole for the key is. I'm thinking that may be the cure to the ticking which is probably a viabration in that area instead of an engine noise.
Yes!!! Mystery solved. It was the ring around the key hole. I put the grommet I found, in the tool pouch under it and no more ticking. Thanks to everyone for your in-put. Now I will have some idea as to where to look in the future for any of those “phantom noises”.
