HK 3" big straights baffle question 5 Years, 1 Month ago
Please help...lost.

OK, I'll try and make this a short story. I've got a 04 1700 with the 3" HK big straights on it. I've been struggling getting the bike dialed in so I decided to take it into our local shop(not a Yamaha shop)and have it tuned in on the dyno. Now the shop told me I need to put baffles in to create more back pressure. The pipes have the "straight through" baffle. There is no "honey comb" part to this baffle. It looks like a solid piece of pipe. The shop is having problems getting the mid range dialed in. My current setting as best as I can remember are: main jet at 170, I put the stock pilot back in, needle on the 4th slot from the top, K&N open air filter. The shop took the pilot down 4 sizes, which cleaned 3000 rmp and above, idle is now on the lean side, and the mid range is still fat. I've been reading about baffles in the forums but nothing talks about back pressure, just noise. Which by the way, my wife rides also, and she complains about how loud my bike is when she rides behind me. Anyway, would the crumb cups create enough/to much back pressue? I don't mind the noise, they tend to leave us alone here in North Dakota. I love this web site. You guys helped me get the bike set up after I bought it. Thanks advance for everyones help.

Straight pipes or pipes with preforated pipe type baffles tend to be bad for low end torque. You need a baffle that increases the backpressure.

PM me with your e-mail address and I can send you an article by one of our members who made his own baffles for the 3" HK's.

Straignt piece of pipe? Did you put them on new? I have an '04 with the HK 3 pipes, and the baffle that came inside mine looks like, for the lack of a better description, sort of a serrated-edged vortex. HK sells other baffles to install in your pipes, depending on the desired result. Have you checked their website? Maybe the ones you have are ones they make, maybe not. Let me know what you find out, please!

No such thing!

Once you start on the slippery slope of 'mods' there's no end.

Hey Roadkill, no the pipes were on the bike when I bought it. I remember the guy saying something about the baffles, so I'm assuming he changed them. I stopped in and talked to him again and he did not have the old ones. The bike has come a long way since I've got it. It used to get in the upper 20's MPG, I now have it in the upper 30's. It just never sounds quite right, like it's always running fat. The shop I took it to to dyno dropped the pilot 4 sizes. It does sound better now, but it's popping on decel and is very cold blooded. They knew it would run like that until I get some baffles in that create some back pressure.

You know Doc, your right, I did some mods to my snowmobile and I am constantly messing around with it.

If the one that Doc sent you arn't mine then I have a set of glasspac baffles that I made from the HK straight thru baffles. The HK straight thru are like what you say you have just a stright pipe that slides in and bolts in. I took those and made some like a glasspac muffler out of them. If you PM me your e-mail I will send you the PDF file showing how to make them. But they may be the one Doc sent you. It tones the harsh cracking noise down and make it mellow UNLESS you get into the throttle and the they still talk to you and decel is sweet too.

Hey thanks guys, I got the email. Now we'll see if a redneck from North Dakota can figure it out. Do you guys think that they will give my enough backpressure to solve my midrange being to fat?
