Throttle cables question 2 Years, 2 Months ago
Has anyone ran just the throttle cable and did away with the idle cable? I know the older HD's only had the one cable and they went to 2 for safety, but is it REALLY necessary. I guess it was incase the throttle got hung up, but that has never happened to me or anyone I know. After all if the throttle gets hung up you can always just pull the clutch and shut her down. I just wanted to get your thoughts.

There are forum members who've taken the return cable off without a problem Shamrock. It does clean it up. I've been thinking of doing it also.

When I switched to the 16" apes, I just put the pull cable on & did away with the push (return) cable...the spring on the carb is doing just fine, haven't had a problem.

Single internal throttle here. Works great.

another single cable here, and no probs in 4 years.

keep it lubed though

the only benefit i´ve found of return cables is that if the throttle cable breaks, you can fiddle about and use the return as a `get you out the crap´roadside repair (done a couple for stranded folks). just means the throttle action is reversed.

There is a remote possibility that the return spring could break, then you may want the return cable, saying that, the roadie is the first bike Ive had with a return cable...

I'm still running the O.E.M. dual-cable system. I've noticed that the throttle doesn't "spring back" as easily as my previous bikes w/ single-cable set-up. I keep the cables lubed & they're adjusted properly. Is this normal? Does going to a single-cable set-up help this condition? And, I've got to know, what is the "baggie trick"? What's in the "baggie" & is it legal???

Well I found out something interesting today (not sure if you guys were aware of this)...The factory R* idle cable will also work as the throttle cable AND since I am trying to clean up the bars the factory R* idle cable will thread right in to an HD/custom throttle assembly. This is the one I bought...
