Oil Leak close to pulley 2 Years, 5 Months ago
Could someone give me the most likely place this oil leak is ccoming from? The bike has been sitting for about a month now and continues to drip oil off the primary pulley. I'm not sure where its coming from, and wonder if this is even something I could fix if I did know.

most likely coming from the shaft seal, There have been several threads on this and it seems the cause is running the belt too tight...So that's one option..

That is transfer case oil. The nut holding the pulley got loose, sometimes just tightening the nut will cure it, if not, a new seal and o-ring is needed. Also, there should be absolutely no play on the splines when the nut is loose, it should be a tight fit, if not, you will need to replace both the middle drive gear and front pulley. if it is the 1600, socket size is 36mm, I don't know the nut size on the 1700's. also the transfer case oil (gear oil75/90w) has a wicked smell to it.

I had this problem on my 05 back in Sept.It is a leak of tranny fluid.Could be a loose nit or a worn seal.In my case it was both.Belt was too tight.Dealer fixed,no charge since he put the rear tire on.Check out my previous thread in Tech Discussions on this site.Good luck..JYD
