Air filter question? 5 Years, 1 Month ago
Hey all...I'm too damn fussy! I can't settle on a air cleaner set-up that I like. Is there any reason why I can't just buy a jet kit and throw on a universal K&N filter that will fit?

Yamahawg, I tried that, and found it ran poorly with the K&N and a jet kit, but ran OK with just the filter. The stock box didn't seem to co-operate well with a jet kit. Others may feel diffently, this is just my findings.BB

Yamahawg,
Before I bought the Barons tear drop I did the poor mans BAK where I drilled 5 holes in the front of the stock air cleaner (black plastic part) then put a K&N filter, rejetted, pipes and it ran great. I did not have to change anything when I switched to the Barons tear drop. I think it was on this forum I found the info and pics to do it took me about 30min and totally free! Maybe Doc knows where the link is I can't find it.

I was unclear...I meant just strapping a filter directly on the carb. No stock box or housing of any kind. Something like this.

You could always TRY it. Doesn't seem like it would be any more unresticted than a BAK or something like it. Only problem you might run into is there is no place to bolt the thing to the heads with, to help stabilize the carb(which moves around some when the bike is running and the airbox is off). Learning process? BB.

I was thinking about that. I thought I could either make a bracket or use one for a velocity stack.

Remember your leg clearance to big and you'll have trouble putting your foot on the floor board. The Hypercharger is bad enough.
