a week after i bought the 5x8 $650 at lowes
my fuel pump went! luckily i wasnt more than ~ 10 miles from home!
i bought the trailer to haul more than a bike, i have a tractor too, and the trailer is all over the road empty, untill i installed a plywood deck.
i will notch out the front so the tire can protrude sinse the bike is ~6" longer and the tailgate interfeers with it if it's not on cockeyed...

I have the same trailer, and was a little pissed to find out that my baby wouldn't fit without being put on crooked. I don't know about notching out the front, I think that might take away from the structural strength?

I have three trailers(1-7x12 tandem, 1-6x12 single both enclosed for tools and 1-7x16 open) for my business and i have always found out that a little more room pays off in the long run. Figure when the wife and i go out west to ride we can put both bikes and all our gear and tools in a SECURED AND LOCKED trailer when unattended.

i have a gmc sonoma with a 120Hp 4 cyl, so a larger trailer would just mean i could overload the capacity, so i opted for what is reasonable.
notching out the front rail to put the bike 6" more forward, than making extensions so the tailgate lays back somewhat will give me a little more toung weight and make towing more stable.
this will also not really take any structural integrity away unless i intend to strap down by way of wraping the straps over the side rails and overtightening would tweek them inward.
so strap her down to the deck without going over the railings and it should be all good.

I have the same Sonoma but I am sure you are wrong on the HP! Two squirrels in cage have more real power. I have towed 2200 pounds with my mini truck. I seriously thought at one point that I was going to have to open the door and use one leg to keep it moving. My Roady has more power! What I am saying is that with your truck and even a simple trailer with your bike on it you will be overloading it.Remember you have to stop too.

i know that's why i stayed withthe smaller 5x8 instead of the next up size because the trailer weight itself has to be figured into the equasion, especially for stopping.
and as for structural integrity, notching out the front to fit the bike, has to have a piece fitted in to swallow the tire and be smooth also, not just remove a 6" piece, and you dont tork on the side rails with straps cause you'll pull them together.
strap the handlebars at the risers to the front at the widest point (which is pretty much all you might need), and run a strap looped through & around the rear wheel to the sides (not the side rails).
