Another backfire question 5 Years ago
Hi Guys/Gals

I have an 06 RS that has developed a bit of a pop or backfire when I blip the throttle on a down shift. It will occasionally do it while sitting still and blipping the throttle. The bike has had no mods done to it YET. I have also noticed that when I come to a stop there is a strong smell of exhaust. Any ideas?

Simple answer for the pop/backfire, don't blip the throttle. The carbs on R*'s don't like blipping. I had to break myself of doing it(still guilty on occasion), wasn't a problem on my HD.

No idea on the gas smell, someone else will chime in with ideas I'm sure.

Blipping can cause backfiring....errrrrrr...popping which leaves residual unburnt gas ...thus the smell after you blip and pop and shut her down ....try turning your PMS 1/8th of a turn out till the popping goes away....Coug

GREAT another habit I have to break Is it not harder on the clutch when downshifting if you dont get the RPM up a bit? Or does it not really matter that much?

You want to increase the throttle to match the engine speed to the gear but you don't need to blip it.

Cougar's right about the PMS. Slight popping on decel (assuming the AIS if off) can be reduced by turning the PMS out a bit.
