plug reading 5 Years ago
After I pulled the carb and cleaned it, adjusted the pms, etc. I pulled the plugs to put new ones in. The two rear plugs were all black (fouled), and the front two looked good, ceramic was white with a little tan on the tip. Was a stuck valve the culprit of those two rear plugs looking like that? And since the pms was only 1/2 turn out from the factory, will opening it up make the situation worse? Or could that have been from to much oil in it? In other words.. lowering the oil level, running it a little harder, and the pms out where it should be...I'm hoping it will all be better now. right???

Maybe! Run a couple of tanks through her and check the new plugs for a more accurate reading , since you have made all those changes.BB

What was the setup???....The main jet size..the pilot jet size.... where the clip washers spacers were...what is the PMS now ......how much oil is in her.....all of this is going to add up to the condition of the plugs.....just my opinion.... you need to go to the Tech Tips at the top of the page click on Tech Tips then click on carbs and start reading...start with WOT test .....Good Luck and have fun ...Coug

Hate to say that's 'normal' but it seems to be common to most. The two cylinders seem to run a bit different. An after market manifold that has better flow characteristics helps some but don't forget the front and rear run at different temps so it will be difficult to get them spot on.

Was a stuck valve the culprit of those two rear plugs looking like that?

A stuck valve is a symptom not a cause.

And since the pms was only 1/2 turn out from the factory, will opening it up make the situation worse?

Turning the PMS out makes the idle richer so ..... yes. But then your PMS may not be at its optimum setting.

Or could that have been from to much oil in it?

That's another theory for why SVS occurs.

In other words.. lowering the oil level, running it a little harder, and the pms out where it should be...I'm hoping it will all be better now. right???

Theoretically.

Thanks guys.. btw the carb setup is all stock for an 04' cougar. after I drilled the plug out of the pms, it was only at 1/2 turn out...after the tinkering stage, it's now at 2 1/4 turn out. exactly 4 qts. amsoil 20/50. Next chapter will be on the WOT test. Thanks again for all the advise guys.
