Drive Pulley (31T) 2 Years, 3 Months ago
New to the forum and just bought a 1999 RS with 3900 actual miles! I've changed gearing on previous bikes with good results but curious if this is required on the RS. Can someone direct me to the thread that gives the rationale for this change?

thanks much and love the bike

I personally would not say it's a necesary mod, but it really depends on your driving style

A 99 with only 3900 miles on it? Yikes! why so little and did they do anything like new tires (dry rot) new oil? Anything? If it's been kept in a clean dry place, I would suggest checking the fuse's and wiring for corrosion and give it a full check, make sure the Recall's have been done as well.

BTW

Why would you change the gearing? Is it not fast enough?

Ok, sure you have done some searching to find the same things I will basically tell you. the 31th gives you a bunch out of the hole.

So anyway be safe and enjoy. its got plenty of torque to get you going and keep ya smiling as it is.
I didn't see pics so maybe just adding pipes and air intake will give you what you need.
Goodluck,
Paul

Your stock pully has 33 teeth, going to 31 is a NICE upgrade, best money I've spent on my bike. If you've got the $$$ a naked pully setup is a nice upgrade to do at the same time. If the 31 doesn't get you out of the hole fast enough, speedstar makes a 30 but you'll need a shorter belt if you go that route.
