My first oil change 5 Years ago
Well thanks to the helpful tips on this website I have successfully changed my own oil. I had the dealer do the 600 mile service, so this is actually the 2nd change for the bike. However I do have some questions. When I went to the dealer to get a new filter I asked the mechanic what he thought about going to synthethic oil and he said he wouldn't do it. Something about the synthetic bonding so well to the internals that some of it gets burned onto the pistons.(Im sure you guys can tell Im not a mechanic haha). Or something to the effect that roadstars that have had synthetic oil get much more carbon buildup and that there is always an oil trail in the manifold, whatever that means. So after hearing that and reading that alot of you guys use synthetic, I went with castrol syntec blend. Do you think my dealer is crazy? I would like to go full synthetic but I am just a little unsure. Please help
Thanks Dlm456

At 3500 miles, I wouldn't think twice about running a full synthetic oil. In fact , I did.BB

Re:My first oil change 5 Years ago
I changed my oil two weeks ago and used Castrol Syntec...the bike is running great. Tuesday I changed my transfer case oil to Mobil 75x-90w full synthetic and it is running smooth as the proverbial prom queen's thighs...

Now I just need to find my magic wand so I can check/change the plugs without removing the tank Believe me, I as mechanically challenged as they come around here

Regards, Ted

That tank is not as big an issue as it looks. Pop the seat. Pull the long bolt from the rear of the tank. Take the 3 dash screws out, and lay the dash across your bars with a towel or something between the dash and bars ( all the while leaving the dash wires plugged together ). Disconnect green wire at seat end of tank. Disconnect vent hose at right front of tank (hidden under the dash). Disconnect fuel hose from petcock to fuel pump(remembering to turn the petcock to off).Slide tank backwards a few inches , then up and off. Probably all of 5 minutes. Job much easier when the tank is empty or low(duh). After you do it a couple times, it'll be a piece of cake. When reasssembling, don't go hawgwild tightening the bolts back up, they don't need much. Have at it.BB

as the other guys here have said, no problems with synthetic.

the only things to watch for are synthetics that contain friction modifiers that can cause clutch slip.

as for `getting burnt onto the pistons´, yeah, if it has passed the piston rings to the combustion chamber, but that would only be if the rings were shagged, and if that was the case, it´d be smoking like a 2-stroke!

the `oil trail in the manifold´ bit may be a reference to the oil that accumulates in the bottom of the airbox. this is where the engine breather enters the airbox, and the oil residue is oil from the breather condensing. it´s quite normal, so don´t worry.

i wouldn´t say your dealer is crazy, just a bit misinformed (erizo goes off to join the diplomatic corp . )

I think the dealer is full of it too.
BB is right, it's not that hard to remove
the tank.just take your time and you can do it.
And yes do turn the petcock off.And make sure
you hook the gas hose back up before you turn the gas
back on.
