I have been looking at my front pulley and seeing some of the things here and on some bike sites. I was wondering if you had to buy the kits like the one from Baron's or can you just remove the cover that is stock?

You need a mount system that attaches it to the frame. The stock one is not open and covers the pulley. The Baron's kit opens it up. I used the Baron's so can't comment on any other ways of doing it.

It definitley would not be as fancy looking. You could clean it up and paint everything nice though. Not all dirty and grungy like mine was.
Edit: Gram made a point I didn't think of. You would need to support it in some way.

I just sold a chrome pulley to Jade it was designed to use with or without the cover and barons used to sell a part cover that would finish the edges but leave the pulley visable

Could you take off your stock pulley and have it chromed or powdercoated. Chroming might be an issue with the chrome on the teeth of the pulley but with powder coating they could just not spray the teeth. Just thinkin out loud may be a dumb idea.
