Should I mess with it? 5 Years ago
I have noticed that my exhaust smells like the bike's running rich. Seems a little worse on cool mornings but most always noticeable and sometimes when I shut it down a little stream of smoke drifts out of the muffler. I'm going to check the plugs later today and see what they tell me. I just wonder if I should adjust the PMS or not. When I took it in for the first service at 800 miles they did adjust the carb because it was a litte rich but I have since removed the AIS and done the stage 1.

Here's the vitals on the bike:
06 Silverado
3500 miles
Stock intake
Stock exhaust w/stage 1
No popping / backfireing
AIS removed
35-42mpg
As far as I'm concerned it runs like a top and no, I'm not leaving the choke on.

Any and all input is appreciated.

Based on your gas mileage you're not overly rich.

You could be a little rich on the idel circuit. Try turning your PMS in 1/4 turn.

AIS and Stage 1 don't enrichen the mix.

Ok Doc. I will try that. For what it's worth, I just pulled the plugs and here's a pic. I'ts not the best but I'm seeing a tan to light tan coloring, electrode looks OK and the light coating of carbon around the base seems acceptable to me. But, I'm no expert. That's why I come here

You're come to the wrong place if you're looking for experts.

The general condition of the plugs is not alway a good way to fine tune the carb jetting as there are many factors that can affect the plug. From the gross prespective, I'd say you look OK. The condition of the electrode, porcelain and ground strap can help you to fine tune the carb.

Your bike is stock and running well so I'd hesitate to do much beyond tweaking the PMS. You seem to be OK on the high and slightly rich on the low end.

As before, trying turning the PMS in 1/8 of a turn at a time until you get noticeable popping on decel. At that point, you should be the best you can get for your current setup.

Well.....I F-ed that up That damn screw has no resistance to it at all and when I was turning the screwdriver trying to get into the slot I was actually turning the screw. I'm not too sure how far I turned it. From your last post, I gathering that I should just turn it in until I get popping on decel and then back it out and leave it alone? Thanks for all your help and as far as I'm concerned, you are an expert.

BT

Oh yeah, one other thing....Will I make a difference if I leave the air box off while I try and fix this thing?? That screw's a pain in the ass to get to.

UPDATE: I've fiddled with it and the bike is running like shit. I can't get any real popping on decel and am about to start throwing tools Lets just suppose I'm starting from scratch (after I cool down that is) Is there a point from all the way in that I should start at? This is what I get for not leaving well enough alone I guess

Post edited by: bthomas, at: 2007/05/04 10:42

No sweat.

Turn the PMS in until it lightly seats. DO NOT force it. Turn it out 2.5 turns.

Turn it out slowly until the engine stumbles. Then counting the turns, turn it in until it stumbles.

Halfway it a starting point (should be max revs). You many want to turn it and additional 1/4 from there and see how it runs.

This process should be done at idle set to about 900 rpm.

Doc you are a genius!!! After a cold beverage and some time to simmer down I followed you instructions. What I wound up with was 5 turns between the inner & outer "stumbles". I stopped at 2.5 and ran 'er down the road. I have my Roadie back!!! It acclerated and ran as good as ever with no popping, burping, farting, etc. I'll keep an eye on it for a while to see if it needs a little (and I stress little) more adjusting. Thanks again for your help and the valuable lesson.

It's nice to deal with other riders who look out for one another, instead of ridiculing someones ignorance or mistakes. This forum is a breath of fresh air compared to MANY forums.BB
