REAR TIRE..........size 6 Years, 10 Months ago
I was wondering........
Does anyone know what is the largest tire size that can be put on the rear rim.
Stock is 150, can you put 180?
Or do I need to buy another rim?

Roto I upsized to a 160 on the rear. Ive read where that is as big as you can go without doing some modification on the front splash. Some of the guys have went up to 180 but Im not sure what the mods were.

Daglassguy is right. On the stock 3.5 rear rim, anything bigger than a 160 is wasting your money.

As the tire becomes larger (150 to 160) the rim begins to pull the sidewall in and narrows the contact patch. Thus, on the stock rim a wider tire will not necessarily look wider. 160 is a good compromise and you won't need to do any mods

If you want to put on the 180, then I'd recommend going to a different width rim .... 5-5.5". Most guys also go to the 18" rim as if you're going to pay the big bucks for the rims you might as well show them off (big diameter = more rim showing = less tire showing).

However .... ..... as you go wider you'll have minor fitment problems. In most situations the tab for the brake mount needs to be ground about 1/8" and as does the fender subframe. The lower splashguard is also toast.

Go to a 200 .... even more extensive grinding. You should go on the Delphi Forums and check out some of the things guys have been doing.

Thanks for the input.
Ya, I am doing some major mods to the back end, (ie) cut the bracket for the rear swing arm and added 5/8" to it, making the rear end drop 2". Also I cut the upper single bolt and bracket(frame) off, and did away with the whole under support for the fender, then made an external support out of 5/16" plate to go down either side of the fender, which then bolts to the frame. Cut the rear fender off in the front and rolled it forward about six inches. So any more mods will be no prob.
I'm just cheap and didn't want to buy another rim if I didn't need too. Besides if I did I could hear my wife now... Well if I need too, then I'll listen to my wife And get a rim for a 200, since that is what I really want anyway.
Thanks for the help!!! ROTO

Your fender mod sounds interesting. Sorta like the HD fender supports.

I'm not quite sure I understand where you "cut the bracket for the rear swing arm and added 5/8\" to it, making the rear end drop 2\". What exactly did you cut?

Nothing wrong with "cheap"; do it myself all the time.

Lets see.... where to begin? ...Or rather, how to explain!!!!!
The + shaped relay arm that bolts to the swing arm, the shock, and the two supporting rods. The one that everybody buys to lower their bike "If they're independantly wealthy" or flips over the stock one and grinds to get the same effect...." Well, on the swing arm, where the + shaped relay arm bolts to, if you cut the two brackets which the bolt goes through, then extend them 5/8" away from the swing arm, you get the same effect. that was a mouthfull. Does that sound understandable???? Or should I take pics.

I understand.

Ingenious.

Not a mod for the 'faint of heart'. I take it that welding is one of your talents.

Looking forward to a pic of your bike.

Ya, I started welding when I was around 12 years old with oxy acetylene...self taught. Then moved up from there. Went to college to learn about metalergy Just love to fabricate, cant get enough of it.
As for the pics.... I'll try and get some. I tear my bike down, do some mods, put it back together, ride..... then do it all over again.
My air cleaner is off an old chevy 454 big block....
It had six dueces, so I took one of the air cleaners off, polished it up, and stuck it on.
Got a lot of people at the Hollister rally in California this year asking where I got it from. Said they wanted one. Go figure.

Hey Doc, I was wondering, does your bike have the six degree rake and the 4" over stock length in the pic on your signature? I read it on another post, and was wondering.

Post edited by: ROTOPILOT, at: 2005/07/07 00:39
