I normally fill up and put 4.3-4.5 gallons in with each fill-up, and I calculate right around 37 MPG. I decided to run it as dry as I could, and ran out the reserve this morning on the way to work....right in front or a gas station! She took 5.379 gallons to fill, with my punched out neck, and still calculated out to right at 37 MPG.

I've always heard that these gals hold 5.3 in a bone-dry tank....and I think I just proved it.

Yeah and you just proved my point that 37 mpg is about the average for a R*. I have 2 R*'s and both get about the same. One is bone stock with slip on mufflers, the other has true duals & K&N air filter and is fully dressed with fairing, hardbags & tour pak.
Let me ask you how many miles did you go on that 5.3 gallons???

I wish I could tell you, but when I reached down to switch it to the reserve, it was already there, so I knew I was at the bottom. Not too scientific, I know....but hey?

Inquiring minds want to know. After you ran out of gas, how did you get going again? did you have back up, or did you rent a gas can? P.S. Nevermind..I just read your original post again.......Duh!

quick question for the guys with injection....

is the fuel pump in the petrol tank?

just wondering because harleys have their pump in the tank, and they are cooled by the petrol. run them out of gas 3 or 4 times an it can lunch the pump, and thatīs expensive. known a couple of people who have changed the pump on road kings, and after talking to jon olsen at S&S, he explained this was the probable cause, and after asking the owners, this is what they both had done.

might be worth looking into.....
