Clutch adjustment 2 Years, 2 Months ago
I'm very close to finally finishing my apes. Working on it last night to get the throttle cable on. Going back to my original part of this project. The clutch. Seems pretty straightforward to install and adjust the lever. Problem now is that I cannot appear to shift the gears. I can't tell if the clutch cable is pulling enough to engage the clutch or if there is an adjustment needed to the shift shaft itself. Is there a step I'm missing here? Haven't tried with it running yet.

When the bike is up to full operating temp you want a nickles worth of slack / free play between the clutch and the perch. But it could also be you need to adjust the shifter. I would say first tighten up the clutch cable a little at a time and see if you get any results. If you can get it to where you can shift take it out for a ride to get it warmed up and then adjust it correctly.

How did you find a clean road to get out? I have about a 1" of ice out front yet, thinking by the weekend I'll make it if it stay warm like they say?

Is the cable tight already or do you have slack yet and need to tight up more? Like Musky said you want a little slack between lever.

Roads are all clear and dry here. I didn't see hardly any sand either which surprised me. A lot of pot holes on the heavy traffic roads but once I got past them it was great riding.

I had it all tight and then loosened up the lever play to where it's supposed to be. Typically you can shift out of neutral with the bike off. It's not happening so I'm guessing I need to turn it on. Weather hasn't been agreeing. It's getting better now. Time to roll her out and fire up.

If the bike has been sitting the plates get stuck together and the clutch won't release correctly. That's why the bike jerks forward sometimes when you kick it into gear with the lever pulled in after it's been sitting.

That is what happened to me when I put my forward controls on. The bike wouldn't shift at all. I adjusted and adjusted and couldn't get the damn thing to do anything. I replaced the shifter linkage along with the forwards so naturally I am thinking it has to be something I just changed. After realizing it could be because the bike had sat for so long I fired it up and within seconds it was shifting like it should. So fire it up and see what happens.

Look at it at the other end... if the lever at the clutch end of the cable is moving adequately, about 3/4", the issue is inside and has more to do with sticking plates and exercising it a little to free them up after sitting.

See now that right there is the type of miserable experience I always try to learn from. Thank you for your hours of frustration in saving me my own. Started the bike and it popped into gear. A couple of rough shifts later and it seems to be working perfectly again. This is the longest I've put a bike up for so it's a lesson learned. I'm so close to riding season that I can smell it. Or is that the smell of exhaust from last year's gas?? I'd chance a ride but I currently have no front brake cable. I guess it's old skool with rear brake only.
