No haven't gotten the pieces out yet. But the bike is about an hour away. So I have a snake magnet I will be fishing through the bike when I get the parts. Looking like it will prob be next weekend.

Im sure it will work on the stock bike. I just took mine out a couple weeks ago. And in order for it to be any different, The engine crank cover would have to be different. That is what it is housed in. Don't relly see how a differint size would be made and work unless the oil pump itself was different and the piece the pump turned wasn't the same size as stock. In that case the crank case had to be pulled apart. I would think it would tell you if you needed something elst to work with it. From looking at mine when I pulled it out, and looking at that one. It looks like it will work, they just beefed up the part of the shaft that is week on the old one. My guess would be YES it will work, if you need conformation from someone who has used it, I understand. But I would be willing to bet it will work fine. Not a mechanic, but will be before too long.

Yes, that's the 'new' oil pump gear to replace the old one that sometimes breaks.

Not a machanic, but I don't think this thing breaking is gonna give you any certain sound. I had knocking coming from the lifters, or rods, b/c the lifters were bleeding out w/o oil coming to replentish. I would imagine you will have all sorts of different things happen when the engine isn't getting any oil. I found it by tring to change the oil. But I am sure there are clever ways to see if you are pumping oil. Sure one of thease guys will chime in and give you a better idea. But you could take the oil filter off, (with a pan under it) and start the bike. If no oil comes out..... well there you go. If so, thats not your problem.

when they break you loose oil pressure and the lifters are the first to suffer

I hope it works too cuz I ve seen lots of fellow R* riders over here finding it difficult to locate a new oil gear meanwhile still not sure if the recall had been done by the previous owner. That would save a lot of hassle for $45.

I will try it next week and let ya all now.

Cheers

Man that sucks big time. I have a 2001 and installed a Barnetts spring and plate kit and while i was in there i replaced the oil pump gear to the new version. My gear was in good shape but after doing this, and seeing how easy it really was, I dont see why everyone dont do this and make that change...even better than that i dont understand why Yamaha dont do a recall on that part.

I'm with Sooner. I did the same thing. Cheap insurance.

After hearing about this on the forum last year, When I had My trans recall done I had the oil pump gear replaced with the new version as well as the intake manifold which was badly cracked and dry rotted and had the new one ported too (+ $20). It only cost me the price of the parts. A note to anyone out ther getting the trans recall done, Anything you want done to the engine will only cost you the price of the parts as all engine teardown is covered in the recall/warranty. Big bore, cams, etc. GET'ER DONE. My stock Oil Pump gear looked perfact with no wear but it only had 15,000 miles for a 99 R*.
