Flooding 2 Years, 2 Months ago
I've put about a 1,000 miles on my 1999 RS since I bought it a few months ago and love the bike. I do have a technical question for you long time RS owners.

A couple of times the bike appeared to flood with a strong smell of fuel.

One time after just starting the bike it died and I could smell fuel but could not find any leaking of fuel anyhwere on the bike. It would not start again until I opened the throttle wide open and let it crank a few times to clean out the cylinders. Started and ran ok afterwards.

Another time I opened the petcock and turned on the ignition. Before hitting the start button I could hear the fuel pump working overtime and then could smell fuel. Once again no fuel leaking on ground or anywhere else that I could find. I started cranking the engine and it took a while but finally started.

My guess is that the needle valve in the carb is sticking open and letting the pump overflow the carb but not sure where the fuel is going if this is the case.

Any ideas?

Thanks; great forum!!

When the bike is on the kickstand the gas is going right into the engine. It does sound like the needle is not sealing on the seat. but now you have to find out why.Could be the float sticking or needs adjusted or it could be a pc of dirt or varnish on the needle. You can try some seafoam or remove the carb and give it a good cleaning. I've also had luck spraying carb cleaner right into the fuel inlet on the carb to break down varnish build up inside the bowl.

If this works, You know that line on back of your air filter that goes to the carb? Well it dead ends into a metal tube (Pictured above) on back of air cleaner, it is secured by a screw on back of air cleaner, this shows where it goes, nowhere! Your carb overflows, it goes up tube and pees on back of warm air cleaner where it evaporates before it goes anywhere else. Brilliant Yamaha move, you believe they actually engineered this into the bike? Priceless.

In a real Puke, gas goes out so fast it pours onto the engine at the V bottom. I had that, to cure it until I went pumpless I drilled a hole in that plastic plate below the metal tube and ran a hose from the carb, through the hole and to the ground.... where people easily toss Cig buts at it because "It's not a HD" So, I went pumpless.

Hole I drilled below fake tube to run a real drain to the bottom of frame.
