White smoke 5 Years ago
A buddy of mine and I were riding a couple weeks ago, and he claimed that everytime I let off the throttle, whether to shift up or down or on decel, I would get some white smoke out of the pipes. I got home that day, revved up the bike a couple times and sure enough, everytime I let off the throttle some white smoke would come out. Never when I'm hitting the throttle. Any suggestions as to what may cause this? I"m almost leaning toward some gunk and carbon boogers caught in the valve seats and allowing a little oil blow by....but thats just me. I"d like some input guys. Thanks in advance.

White smoke is usually a sign that there is a coolant leak. For the R* it's probably not the case.

Second guess water in gas.

Third guess intake manifold leak. (this one's a long shot )

Does it smell like oil at all? Slight bluish tinge? If so, I'd probably agree that you blowing oil somewhere.

You do have the big bore .... maybe you're getting some oil blowing by the rings.

Try doing a compression test and see what it says. If you're able, do a leak-down test as it will get you more info.

If it does have slight bluish tinge, check your oil level. Over filling the oil may cause this also. Ride safe.

Post edited by: slorydr, at: 2007/05/23 19:19

I had the exact same problem with my bike a few weeks ago. I checked my carb, and the float was 11mm above where it should be. I took that down, and the problem went away.
I also changed the plugs, changed the oil and drained all the gas out of the tank and put in some 'heet' on my next tank, just in case there was some water in there.

Doc....I guess I don't know if it smells like oil or not, but I can tell you that there is no bluish tint to the smoke. But like I said, it only happens when I let off the throttle (when shifting up or down, or on decel). The bike runs like a friggin bat outta hell. I may have a little more oil in the case than normal....only because I checked the oil one day, and again another day, and one more time another day and all three days I had no oil on the dipstick....so I kinda got a little leary about that so I added some oil to where it reads on the bottom of the hash marks. So I don't know if the oil level is high or low.....these roadstars are so wierd when it comes to the oil level...I'm gonna run a tank with a can of seafoam (shock treatment), change the oil (4 quarts), and probably change the plugs while I"m at it. I think as long as I have the tank off, I will check the intake manifold....maybe take it off, check the "O" rings, and re position it. I'll keep you guys posted....if any of you have any more ideas, please feel free to let me know. thanks guys.

You know what Musky, you might be on to something with the unburned fuel vapor....Once in a while when I shut off my bike, in one of the pipes there is what sounds like a flame burning for a split second. If that may be the case of unburned fuel, what would cause that and how can I get rid of it? I was talking to a guy at work the other day about this white smoke issue (he is a really good wrencher) and he seems to think that it sounds like a lean condition as far as the white smoke thing. I did lean my pms to 3 turns a while back....so the other day I brought it back to 3 1/2 turns again.......now I have to go for a ride to see if that did the trick. ANy more ideas guys is greatly appreciated. thanks

Hey beefcake

Figuring that out could be way above my pea brain An air leak, Bad plug, bad rings, weak spark, high float, valve problem, exhaust leak. I guess start by checking the easy outside the motor stuff first and then go deeper.

Your idle speed may be set too fast. High idle speed can cause fuel vapor out the exhaust upon shutdown.
