I am originally from Shelby, good to hear and see someone from up home. The miles are not a big worry, I have an 04 and I am about to roll over 30,000 miles (Hopefully this weekend ).

Hi there. Just registered because I'm looking at buying a Road Star. I've been riding a Viragos for years. They're fun but I'm wanting a cruiser. I'm looking at two Silverados locally.

First is a '99 with 9500mi for $5800. Bike has aftermarket exhaust and seat, but other than that I think it's stock. Seems pretty clean with the low mileage. The right luggage bag is burned through on the bottom because the aftermarket pipes are too close with no heat shield. Not sure what kind of pipes but they're really loud.

Second is an '01 with 26k for $5000. Customs include Mustang seat, V&H shotgun pipes, aftermarket intake like this one, and gel grips. Both recalls have been completed. I'm told that during one of the recall fixes something was done to increase the displacement to 102 c.i. This bike could use some sprucing up. Aluminum surfaces are foggy and need polishing. Chrome needs some cleaning up. Paint is good.

So I'm looking for some advice. Is there any difference between the 99 and 01 models? Is 26k much for these bikes? What are the gotchas that I should be looking for? For example Viragos are notorious for starer issues. Do the Roadstars have any known issues like that?

Thanks in advance for any input. I'll be making a decision tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get one and become a regular on the board.

Darrel

Well with a 99 with 9500mi for $5800 & an 01 with 26k for $5000 the 99 price seem's kinda high and the 01 is on the mark if it's n great cond with no mech/cosmetic issue at all.

I looked up avg retail book values in NADA,99 = $4,311 ($1,500 over book) & 01 = $5,000 (Right on top end book value)and keep in mind thses values are for a bike in very good cond needing nothihg except maybe a tire but no paint-issues work needed,no bad appearing chrome or aluminum ,runs perfect, etc.

Kelly Blue book trade in values on these bikes are considerably less then the above stated avg NADA values.

Also, for example,11/2009 i picked up a mint cond 2006 silverado with 4,700 miles on it from the original owner since new for $6,500. It has the tall windscreen, tall backrest, saddle bages,Roadburner longshot type aftermarket pipes(included original stock pipes in like new cond),AL-Mag wheels, passing lamps, brand new battery, new plugs all for $6,500.

Thats a 7 yr newer bike with half the miles for only $700 more then a 7 yr older 1999 bike with double the miles on it & is 5 yrs newer then the 01 that has 5x more miles on it.

Better deals are out there if you take a little more time looking arround on ebay and other seeling sites/magazines/auto trader/papaers etc esp since you still have a bike to ride in the mean time .

If $5k is you'r limit i bet you could find a considerably newer R* for that same money ,i watch them on ebay at times and they are not selling for NADA book values. I see R*'s going for considerably less the NADA book value esp with the recession we are in. Everything including houses new & used cars are going for below top book values & thats including the classic & muscle cars too unless they are something special-rare. So why should you over pay or pay top dollar for something not that special, not rare, or hard to that hard to find for sale?

Just my $.02

Scott

Darrel, if you're anywhere near New Jersey I'm selling my '05 Midnight with 2,024 miles for $5600. It's in showroom condition with a ton of aftermarket accessories. Email me at scottturner@comcast.net.

Thanks. Scott

Don't sell yourself so short! You are looking at 10 year old bikes with recalls maybe done maybe not.
Check out this on ebay:

ebay

This is my personal bike. I purchased it new in a crate, and everyone of the just under 20,000 miles were put on with me in the seat. Willing to help with delivery, or even make delivery up to 400 miles. This has a reserve of $6500, but will probably drop that to $6000 if needed to get it sold.
Anything less than that, and I'll keep it for a spare. this is 8 or 9 years newer and is a bike that did not require recalls.

rll1941@hotmail.com if you have any questions.

WOW,SEE WHAT I MEAN/LOL!!!!!!!

Those look to be 2 very nice bikes at relistic/reasonable prices for the market today which is just what i was talikng about, much newer bikes for almost the same money,1 with extreemly low miles and the other with same approx miles + - .

I'd buy either one of them in a heartbeat if i were in the market for a R* but i already have an 06 Silverado.

They should not last long at those prices, let us know if you buy one of them.

sturner has a nice looking bike and good price, but he's east coast, I'm in Montana.

I decided not to go with the 01. It was a good bike but just not a clean and shiny as I want. Looking around the net for other R*s I think I can be patient for a good deal. I did make an offer on the 99 of $4800, but it's on consignment at the bike shop. We'll see what happens there and maybe I'll be posting pics of my new ride soon.
