Re:White smoke 4 Years, 12 Months ago
if you was having fuel vapour coming out on the overrun (shutting off the throtttle when running) you´d get some pretty spectacular flashes when you rolled it on again. personally, i´d say it was unlikely.

reasonable rule of thumb for smoke.

blackish - too rich

whitish bluish - oil.

white smoke - a new pope has been elected

did the stealer fit the 108 kit for you? if so, they might have fitted the ring gaps in line as opposed to spacing them 120º on the piston. doing that would cause a bit of blow-by of oil and cause white smoke.

to check with the compression tester, screw it in, disconnect the plugs and earth them on the engine (all 4) spin the engine over. check the p.s.i. against the limits in the manual. if it´s low, put a tablespoon of oil down the plug hole and test again. if the pressure increases it´ll be piston or ring related, if it doesn´t it´ll be valve related.

Post edited by: erizo, at: 2007/05/29 10:35

Doc it doesn't smell like oil burning....all I know is that my buddy said that it stinks....so I guess I can't really tell you exactly what it smells like.

I give - stumped me!

Did this just start happening?

White smoke is due to water. No radiator thus the water must come from somewhere else. In a cold engine, it's just the fuel/air not burning completely. In areas of high humidity you can also get some white smoke from condensaton buildup.

It could be possible that you are lean. What are your settings?

Doc, my settings are 170 main, pms was at 3 to 3 1/4 (I turned it out 1/2 turn after I was told about the white smoke), needle is on the 4th clip I believe (whatever it said in the barons instructions for the starting point). I went riding with a friend of mine, and she said that she didn't see any white smoke at all but when I cracked the throttle, I would give her a puff of black smoke and she said that really stunk....lol So I kept her behind me and let her sniff "puff the magic dragon"....lol I know black smoke indicates a rich condition or incomplete burn of the fuel. I do have the dynatek coils and wires, so I'm sure that will be one cause of the black smoke due to higher ohms. What do you think now, Doc?

Black smoke = rich.

Which part of the circuit depends where you cracked the throttle.

I believe Barons recommends 5 on the clip. If so, you need to go to 4.

Doc....was that a question? If so, I'm not sure I understood the question. And if I go to the 4th clip, what exactly would that do? Just curious.

Sounds like a Soap Opera

So ... if you're at 5 (which Baron recommends) you need to go to 4.

If you're at 4, then you need to go to 3 1/2.

I assume that you've already done the WOT test and it's OK.

Ok.....so my needle is on the 5th clip....could you tell me exactly what changing it to the 4th clip would do? Just curious.

Changing to 4 will make you leaner. Should help reduce if not eliminate the black smoke when you crack the throttle.
