Newbie - Questions 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Hello All!

I am the proud owner of a 1999 Yamaha Roadstar. The bike was running fine when I bought it, however afer trailering it home the bike will not stay started unless you keep the choke out. I would like to drain the gas tank, as well as other fluids and change all the filters.

I wonder would someone be able to tell me how best to drain the gas tank and check the fuel filter for sediment?

Chris the trailer ride home screws up more bikes than anything known to man. Is the idle speed set high enough?

As for draining the tank, others may tell you something different, but here's what I would do.
1) Disconnect battery.
2) Remove plastic cover over filter/pump assembly left side of jugs. Fragile is not the word for this part, be careful.
3) Set petcock selector to reserve position.
4) Get a a gas can, undo fuel line from petcock to filter at the filter side, and drain.

Since this is a what I'd do reply, I'd do a search for the relocating pump/filter tech article on here. Then I'd move the pump and go buy an inexpensive car fuel filter and relocate that under the seat. It will greatly clean up the looks of the motor, plus it will make changing fuel filters an easy and inexpensive project. Since your on here, it will only be a matter of time until you start modding so you may as well go ahead and start with this.

Welcome by the way.

When you put new gas in it also use a carb/injector cleaner like seafoam in the fuel. That should help with your running problem. Sounds like the carb may be a little gummed up. How long was it stored without being started?

I am not sure on that. Although I fired up and ran before I bought it. I wondering if trailering it home could have airated the gas or shook something up. But in any case I plan to drain all fluids and replace all filters anyway.

+ 1 on the seafoam. And I'd do that before I changed any fluids that way you only have to change your oil one time. I doubt it did anything to our gas on the ride home, or else it would do the same thing when you were riding it.

If it ran right before the ride home and now won't, I would definately check the PMS screw and make sure it didn't vibrate out on the way home. Someone may have backed it way out trying to set the jetting and it may have come out. Having to choke it to keep it running may be an indicator.
