I have an 07 and it will start in gear as long as the kick stand is up. If the kick stand is down, the starter will not engage.
Mine is an 05 and is the same way.

NORMALLY .... your bike should start in gear with the kickstand up.
If not.then one of the switches is bad or disconnected ... or you have a short somewhere.

If it is in gear the stand has to be up and the clutch lever has to be pulled.
Clifford
Ditto me on this. Stand up, clutch pulled and it will start right up.

Mine wont start in gear.
Is that switch in the handlebar housing?
Or is it at the clutch going into the motor?

well mine is an 01. up until recently, as long as the kick stand was up and the clutch pulled.. it would start... which is great, in case it stalls in traffic... now I would hate for it to stall... YIKES

There is a switch that is located towards the pivot end of the kickstand. And one located at the pivot point of the clutch lever.
The neutral switch is located in the transmission, I think. I've never gotten into the engine to actually find it.

My 01 will not start unless its in neutral. Doesn't matter if kick stand is up or not.
If I am in 1st gear with clutch pulled the starter fires but real slow not enough to start the bike. In neutral it fires hard.
