Dyna 3000 / HC Pistons 6 Years, 9 Months ago
I have hc pistons and am running premium gas in my 03 Roas Star with the Dyna 3000 at a setting of 30B. I thought I was getting the Road Star Knock but the dealership mechanic says I have some pinging and recommended I use some octane booster. I am a bit skeptical but will go with his comments.

Before I jump into the octane booster, I thought I would try to make a couple of other changes.

First, I am focusing on retarding the Dyna 300 setting. To do that, should I be going to 28B or 32B?

Second, I have the bike set pretty lean - 67.5 main, 4th clip from the point on the needle with donut and 1 washer below, Mixmax screw about 2 turns out, enrichener screw turned all the way in, with BAK and Roadhouse Classics. I am going to move to the 3rd clip on the needle with 2 washers to get to about a 3 1/2 position.

Are these steps going in the right direction to eliminate the pinging?

Post edited by: RSMGreg, at: 2005/08/26 15:53

HC pistons usually require higher octane (premium) fuel. As for the Dyna settings, place a post on the R* Forum for advice. I've seen quite a few discussions recently re settings.

I appears that you may be lean, especially for the BAK, roadhouse, piston setup that you have. I would recommend setting the needle to the 4th clip with the PMS set at 3 turns out and doing the WOT to see how it runs. Check out the Tech Tips section on the details of how to do the test.

BTW .... the postion of the clip is indicated by counting the slots from the top of the needle when the needle orientated the same way as it sits in the carb (blunt end up).

You want the lower numbers 28B or 26B. I run 28B and still get some detonation(Ping)with premium. Don't waste time with Octane boosters until you have tried to tune it out.

One thing to note, Stock R* cams are just NOT what the Dr. orders for 10.5:1 compression ratio. They do not have a lot of overlap between the intake opening and the exhaust closing and make a lot of cylinder pressure. Ultimate Imports makes an offest kit to advance or retard them a few degrees but I haven't tried it on mine yet.
