12 volt recptacle mounting question? 4 Years, 11 Months ago
I bought an all weather “cigarette lighter” 12 volt receptacle from Auto Zone today. My GPS and Cell Phone both have automobile type adapters, so I thought it might be a good idea to wire up a plug somewhere on the bike. Where is a good place to locate the receptacle and how about wiring it up? The GPS mounts on the right side of the handle bars just a couple of inches outboard of the riser. The power cord is about 5’ 4” long. I don’t always have the GPS on the bike (I do know how to get around town or up to the city without a map) so I’d like to set it up so I could access the receptacle without taking the bike apart each time but still have a fairly Bristol (neat for those of you who are not sailors) way of connecting the electrical wires to the GPS. The cell phone connector wouldn’t have to be so fancy because it would be for charging only or for emergency power to the phone. I could put the phone in my jacket pocket or in the windshield bag and just run the power cord to the receptacle as needed.

Post edited by: JMayton, at: 2007/06/09 22:18

Can't take credit for this one , as I saw it on S C Riders bike when I ran into him in south Ga.,But he built a little bracket ,Installed the power point, mounted it off his left side pass. footpeg bolts(under the footpeg), and it looked clean and cleaver. He told me he charged his phone with it as well.I don't know about the wiring details, but I liked enough to consider doing it to my bike as well.BB

Well, I did a temporary install on the receptacle. I pulled the seat, took out the tool bag. ran some wires from the battery along the left side following some wires already clipped in and just rested the receptacle in the space where the tool bag would go. I put the GPS on the handle bar, took a turn around the bar in between the risers and led the GPS power adapter under the tank bra into the area under the seat, plugged it in and went for a ride. Everything works fine. I tested the cell phone as well and it indicated that it was charging. I think I'll still have room for the tool bag if I'm not using the GPS and I may figure out a more stable way of mounting the receptacle in the future. At any rate, I have power for GPS, cell phone and air pump. It is just like having an RV without the need to empty the holding tank.
