Tubeless ME880's on Roadie spokes 4 Years, 11 Months ago
After hearing nothing but good things about the ME880's, I put a pair on my '01 Midnight Star.

I've had them on about 2 weeks or so and they are a fantastic ride. However, as I was perusing this forum today, I saw something that has me freaked out.

Apparently it is a big no no to put tubeless tires on the stock Roadstar spokes? Massive failure or some other scary combination of words?

I'm a bit confused, as both the company who sold me the tires (who knew what kind of bike I had, but that is understandable) but more confusing, the service dept. at the Yamaha dealer that put the tires on; neither of them said anything to me regarding this issue.

I'm again confused as I see a number of users on this forum with ME880's on similar spoked wheels.

While I take full responsibility for not researching things further, I would think that someone, specifically the mechanics, would have said something.

I'm also a little irritated that, if all I have read is true, I have a pair of ME880's with about 100 miles on them that I now have to get rid of and spend a ton more on new tube tires.

Am I as screwed as I think I am?

don´t sweat it mate.

i´ve had me880´s on my 2001 roadie with spoked wheels for the last 8000 miles without problems.

in the days of the first tubeless tyres for bikes, the inside of the tyre was considered rougher than tubed tyres, and concerns were raised about tube chafing. the insides of modern tubeless tyres are as smooth as tubed tyres, so there are no concerns, plus i have fitted a LOT of tubeless tyres with tubes for my clients here also without problems.

the main difference now is that tubeless have a tighter sealing bead than tubed, and that´s about it.

keep on riding!

erizo, good to know, I'm about to fit the 880's to my 99 Roadie. As a side issue, I've seen a couple of your resposes to other members and your use of the term 'mate'. Do I detect an Australian connection?

MOUNTING ADVICE FOR METZELER TIRES

Motorcycle tires were originally specified by the manufacturer. Any other use could be dangerous. Check for directional arrows. If present, mount tire so that arrow points in direction of rotation. Some METZELER tires have a red dot in the tire sidewall to indicate the lightest point which should be positioned next to the valve. Clean and lubricate bead with tire mounting lubricant or soapy water. To set bead:
• Remove valve stem core and inflate tire.
• In case device used permits inflating only with valve stem core installed, deflate a tube-type assembly after bead has seated, then reinflate to recommended riding pressure to allow the tube to seat properly.
• Do not inflate more than 40 psi. Reinstall valve stem core and inflate to recommended riding pressure. Check bead control lines for proper seating. If the beads do not seat, deflate and repeat above procedure. METZELER tubeless tires may be used with METZELER tubes on tube type rims. When installing a tube in a METZELER tubeless tire do not tighten valve stem lock nut until tire is seated and inflated to proper riding pressure. Whenever you fit a tube care should be taken not to pinch the tube. Dust the tube with talcum powder. Always use a valve cap with rubber sealing .http://www.us.metzelermoto.com/product_info/pcare/safety/index.htm

Post edited by: Jreed, at: 2007/06/11 11:47

Wow, you guys are quick! Thanks for the input. While I could make the assumption that the dealer put tubes in the tires(as I didn't supply them), I'm going to get in touch with them just to make sure.

They are a dealership, after all.

I really appreciate this forum for all it's priceless info.

Hopefully I can add something worthwhile.

Thanks!

Before this last weekend I would have given you great reviews for the Metz's. About 100 miles away from home the rear seperated "in the side wall" I in no way think it had anything to do with tube I just think there crap.If the belting sperates from the rubber in the side wall with 35 lbs of air it was not the tube that caused it. It was Shity manufacturing and piss poor quality control. I will be picking the bike up tomorrow with a new set of dunlops installed. Thanks to progressive roadside assistance for saving the day. And F-U metz for nearly killing me.
