Cylinder head recall on 1600 ? 1 Year, 8 Months ago

I was surfing another site and saw this quote on another site where a guy was interested
in buying a Roadie,
" 1. There was a valve sticking issue with the 1600s that resulted in 100% of them being recalled for a complete top end replacement. Make sure it's been done or that you can let the dealership doing the recall have the bike for a while. They don't stock the parts and will need to order them. If any dealer refuses to do the recall, report them to Yamaha corporate for violation of their franchise agreement. They MUST do ALL recalls no matter how simple, complex or silly (like the R6 recall for fork reflectors that need to be 1/16" higher from the ground). Besides, warranty work is all done at full retail for parts and 100% shop labor rate so it makes no sense to turn down recall work - guaranteed good money for the service department.
I never heard of this, is this guy correct or what ?
Chris

Recalls are rarely a money maker for a dealership or a flat rate mechanic. It takes a REALLY experienced technician to perform a recall in the time allowed. The manufacturers do not take in to account the time required to find the unit in the warehouse, collect the parts needed, put the bike on the lift, and then actually do the work.
My favorite is when a manufacturer issues recall notices and then tells the parts department the recall parts won't be available for 30 days or more. For some strange reason, customer don't like it if you tell then that if you open a repair order on their bike, the dealership will have to hold the bike until the safety recall is done, no mater less of how long it takes to get the required parts.
The R6 recall is a fine example of this. Dealers were told they could not sell bikes they had had in stock for months if the recall was not performed, but the parts were not available when the 'Stop Sales' notice was issued.
Rant mode off.

I think the guy is confused. There were a few issues of SVS on the 1700 which was never a recall.

I know of 2 service managers who have techs been doing the tear down between 6 to 7hrs, so it is a money maker for them. And at my dealer, well exdealer since I moved. they charged at the time when I had mine done 68hr labor, but Yamaha was charged 85hr labor since that was the max allowable, so again, they made money.
And for me and a friend, parts were ordered, as I still rode, when parts came in, brought bike in late afternoon Thur, was riding by noon Sat.

There was never a head RECALL. Some that have had SVS really bad have convinced the dealer to pull the heads and ream the valve guides to 6mm while the bike was under warranty. That was on the 1700's only I couldn't convince my dealer I had to cure the SVS myself after the warranty had expired and I didn't ream the guides. I re-jetted the carb the way it should have been to start with. YES it took me a while but I got it.

I've been wondering if those like you that worked with the problem a long time and finally got rid of their SVS just finally wore the guides enough that the problem went away.

I concur with what the others here have said. I have never ever seen a recall on Yamaha's Road Star heads, regardless of year. The 1600's could develop the SVS issues we discuss here on the forum, but were considerably less prone to it than the later model 1700's. The valve guides are generally thought to be narrower than they should be on those. So if your running rich it can be a problem with a 1700. Around here, we tend to keep this issue at bay with either regular seafoam, techron, or Yamaha ring free treatments. It helps with a host of other problems that can develop over time in any engine, so is generally held to be good maintenance practice anyway.
Some one in another place is passing out bad information.
