Whirring sound with a question 4 Years, 11 Months ago
I'm still getting used to the sounds my new "used" RStar is making. I've read some posts about a whirring sound meaning the belt is too tight. When I move my bike with the engine off, especially in the garage when I move it backward, I hear a whirring noise comming from the belt drive area. It kind of sounds like some sort of a childs toy. It has a kind of rythmic cadence to it.

My question: Is this sound normal, or should the bike sound totally silent when moving it around with the engine off? I just want to hear what is normal before I go and try to loosen the drive belt.

That's the trouble with sounds - they are hard to duplicate when typing.

I think of whirring as the sound a tight belt makes while moving at about 30 mph. If you hear a sound from the belt when you move it backwards but not forwards it's possible the belt is misaligned.

Push the bike forward for about 10' and note the position of the belt on the pulley then push it backwards and note the position on the pulley. If it goes from one side to the other, or especiallly tries to ride up on the sides of the pulley, you need to align it.

Sure it's not the brake pads rubbing on the disk?

Update:
I just found the problem! The stock plastic OEM belt gaurd is rubbing against the belt and pully on the inner side of the wheel. I can bend it out, but it slowly creeps back in against the belt. I've got a Barons blem chrome one that should solve the problem, but I haven't been able to install it yet. Looks like I'm going to have to get on that one sooner than later now.

Hey Jeff

Don't follow the instruction for installing it. Just take your old one off and the new one falls right into place. You don't have to take off anything else or disconnect anything. 20 minute job.

Hmmm.....

I had to remove the upper belt guard when I put mine on. Not a big deal, but the Baron Chrome Guard wouldn't go on, not enough room! Still...... that better than loosening up the wheel and having to reset everything.

Bike looks sharp with it on too! Shoulda had it on from the factory....

Hey Musky,
I actually tried installing it once before but gave up. I had the bags off, the bag supports and the upper gaurd and it still would not fit. I tried for about 2 hours. I don't have a jack stand for the bike and it seemed like doing it on the kickstand (which is what I was doing) was not going to work. I was going to wait until I bought a jack to get the rear wheel up off the ground.

You say it's easy, but mine would not fit...did you have your rear wheel up in the air when you did yours?

anything is possible....but it is easier to put on the Barons lower belt guard with the bike in the air. I had to loosen up the rear tire, take the belt off the rear pulley and move the tire back as far as it would go in order to install the lower guard. Kinda sucks that you have to re-align the rear tire again, but it's just one of those things that you gotta do in order to dress up your ride. Good luck
