42mm FLATSLIDE CARB 4 Years, 11 Months ago
I have a question about the 42mm speedstar flatslide carb. I got some quick responses to questions I posted about the stock carb (thank you) but something was wrong and the answer was beyond me. I got sick of playing with the stupid thing after weeks of not getting it dialed in properly and bought a flatslide carb. The thing rocked right out of the box!!! My question is......Would the absense of the TPI sensor cause the engine light to come on? The engine light is now on and wasn't before installing the new carb. The only thing that is different is that there is no TPI sensor or carb heater. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks, Trash

no doubt no doubt

I read on some site where a guy was fitting the tps to the 42 for 100 bucks.
I'm seriously considering that carb myself. My 40 seems to change from week to week. It's really weird. When it's right it golden but I can't seem to keep it dead on in the pilot circuit. I'll ride it for a week and it's perfect and then it goes weird and I have to adjust the pilot jet slightly and everything is great again. Good Luck and let us know how it comes out.

I just got the carb on this afternoon and only got a few miles on between rain storms. I didn't quite break 100mph but got close. I still have to do some real riding to see how this carb is going to work but the preliminary results are amazing!! I bought my bike as a demo with 1300 miles on it. It never ran "great" in my opinion. I had it in three times and got sick of throwing good money after bad. All I can say is that the bike warms up faster, revs smoother, idles smooth, sounds like a different bike, and goes down the road like a raped ape!!!!! I have a friend at a dealership (not where i bought the bike) who got me the carb at cost. ($290something) I may ruffle some feathere here, but I would recomend this carb to everybody because the cv style stock carb is more trouble than it's worth. I would have paid twice the price to not have gone through all of this agervation over the last month! I will keep you guys posted! Oh, the install wes easy too. Less than a halh hour.

Do you have to get rid of the fuel pump with the speedstar 42mm carb?

I didn't get rid of the fuel pump. while the bike was down I relocated it inside the side cover and added a glass fuel filter just before the petcock. The bike seems to run great with it still pumping. Do I need to get rid of it? If so, Why? I have the stock carb. One of the alignment pins on the underside of the diaphram cover is broken off but you can still get it aligned. It has a brand new enricher(choke cable) on it. I also have the dealer installed needle, 50, or 60 piolit jet, 160 main, plus a full kuryakyn jet kit, and a full speedstar jet kit. The carb also has stainless allen screws in the float bowl. Any reasonable offers for the works? Somebody please get back to me on the fuel pump thing! I will check back tomorrow. Thanks, Trash

If you don't like the light on then plug the TPS back in and tape it out of the way to the backbone.

Oppps .... should have read both your posts more closely.

None of the HSRs run with the fuel pump except the Speedstar HSR.

Sorry for the mixup.
