What was your experience with removing the petcock. Easy to remove and reseal? Any tips?
I never did it as I never paid any attention to the idiot light to begin with, I just posted it cause someone asked what could be done to get the light closer in sync...my own bike will run thru a little over 3.5 gallons and then it will sputter a bit and ask me to switch to reserve...I have at this point about 1.5 gallons left, I start looking for a station.......... I have gone a bit over 50 miles on reserve, but it gets kinda iffy by then.........
Yeah, I hear ya. When I am group riding we usually always refill before anyone get's reserve low anyway. Until I trim the petcock tube I'll just be good about refilling before I get too low.
I tested a rejet and the pumpless Grizzly mod over the weekend. Everything worked great for the most part but my engine died a block from home at about 1/8 tank. It caught me off guard as I wondered if it was the new fuel line routing or the carb. But once I coasted to the side it dawned on me that I had been riding 90 minutes w/o stalling or dying so it was unlikely it was something major so I flipped to reserve and it fired up.

OK, I'm a bit confused here (yes, again)....why is everyone going pumpless?? Did your pumps malfunction?

It will eventually, If gravity fails we got a lot more than riding to worry about,,plus it looks better...

OK, well, my oem petcock has a defective positive shut off and I was looking at those Pingle's as a replacement as I can't find a rebuild kit for the oem petcock

Relocated the pump off my '00 R/S to a shelf in the shop 2 yrs ago. Changed-out the float needle & orriface th the 2.5mm unit. I did eliminate the rollover valve. No other changes. I do run the petcock on "reserve" all the time to take advantage of the increased head pressure on the short side. Bike runs great, but gets sluggish on the bottom 1/4 of the tank.

The fuel pump draws fuel from the tank, where with gravity it has to have fuel in the line to work.
In other words the petcock has to allow fuel to drain into the line.
The taller tube on the petcock impedes the gas from entering the line when the tank is low.
By cutting 1/2 in. off the tube you are removing that restriction..
I've read about doing this but I still don't understand how it will help. When I first installed the Grizzly valve I tested it with less than 1/8 tank and the petcock set in the regular position. While riding I realized I was getting low on fuel and the last 5+ miles to the house at highway speeds was with the fuel light on and the guage reading empty. It ran fine.
The standing tube in the tank is of a larger diameter than the carburetor fuel inlet and the gravity pressure in the tube will be the same as it is if the petcock were set in the reserve position.
If the normal petcock position is causing fuel starvation before it normally would I would suspect that the screen is clogging up around the sides. A long hose hooked to the petcock and held above the tank with some carb cleaner in it and a small amount of air pressure to blow it through, with the gas cap removed of course, should clean the screen. If not and a good fuel filter is already in place then I would just remove the screen.

Scott.
The reason we cut the main tube down about a half inch is that the weight of the fuel in the tank at that level doesn't keep up with the amount you would get at that same level of fuel with a pump. So, your bike will reach starvation at an earlier point than it would have with a pump, forcing you to switch to reserve well before you 'low fuel' light comes on. Cutting down the main tube helps the 'low fuel' light and starvation from the main tube to more closely coincide.

I eliminated the pump a couple of years ago. I also cut down the main feed tube by one half inch, as suggested. I didn't alter anything else... not the roll-over valve, the gas cap or the fuel bowl inlet valve. All works great, and it cleaned up the left side real nice.
Removing the petcock and replacing it was no problem... the original seal on it worked perfectly.

Hey Quest. I finished the pumpless mod. Felt both weird and liberating pulling the pump and all the fuel lines (it was relocated under my right side cover so I had the two long runs). I also pulled the carb heater so having the heater, thermo, pump, etc in a box is a bit strange.
I am wondering...seems like the petcock can be removed w/out taking the tank off. Right?

Yes you can take the petcock off with the tank still on the bike...
