Cam cover leak 4 Years, 11 Months ago
Hello All Oil Leak Helpers

I have an older Road* 1600 that is leaking oil in several areas. One area is around the chrome cam cover on the right side and maybe the cam gear cover behind the chrome cover. Anyway, does this just have gasket or does the decompression shaft run through the side of the cover? If the decompression shaft does run through the cover, what type of seal is around the shaft or is it a bushing? Any help before I remove the front pipe and get in to it would be appreciated.

It just so happens that I had the exact same leak last year and finally fixed it this winter. I too thought the leak was coming from the cam cover gasket.....so when I took the cam cover off and discovered the decompression shaft runs thru the cover, I replaced that seal/bushing as well. I went into the Yamaha website and into the parts and service portion....there you will be able to find out anything you need to find, as well as part #'s. Print out the part #'s for the gasket and for the seal/bushing. Good luck....feel free to ask any more questions. But I'm gonna put my money on the decompression shaft seal leaking. I noticed how easy the shaft moved before I replaced the seal...after replacing it, the shaft was a little stiffer telling me that I have a better seal.

Hey, thanks for the reply beefcake2play. I ordered the shaft seal and plan to replace it and the cover gasket. I just did not realize that the shaft ran through the cover. Now I do see that it does and that it has been leaking.

Thanks again,

Jnienke
