Another brake noise question 1 Year, 4 Months ago
My front end, and I'm assuming it's my brakes at this point, is making noise when I'm at around 5-10 miles an hour. It's usually more noticable when slowing down than when starting off. It isn't loud, and unless you're on the bike, you probably wouldn't hear it if in a car or another bike next to me. I can feel a bit of resistance coming from the front end when the noise is happening, but as I speed up, it releases and everything is fine. The noise isn't a squealing, isn't a qrinding, probably closer to a rubbing sound, but not really noticeable.

I'm more concerned about the resistance than the noise. I'm going to bleed my brakes tonight and see what that gets me. I'm doing a 100+ run tomorrow and the brakes are working fine at all speeds, and there are no leaks anywhere.

Anyone have any ideas what this may be? I'll let you know how the brake bleed goes......

To be quite honest, the Roadie may have gotten wind of me and the wife talking about sending it out to pasture for an '08 HD Ultra Classic when they hit the street. Looked at the Ventures, but really like the look and ride of the Ultra. Sorry gents.....love my R*, and if I could talk the wife into keeping it in the garage with the Ultra I'd love to mod it to 1-up for myself, but there's no way she's going for that one.....YET!!

It sounds like it's normal.

After you use the front brakes it makes a noise for a while and then it disappears.

When you the brakes are applied, the pads contacts the rotor. After you let go of the lever, the pad continues to drag on the rotor as the piston does not completely retract. The noise diminishes as the rotor wears the pad.

Thanks Doc, but I've had the bike since new ('03) and it now has 10k miles on it and this started a few weeks ago. Began to get a little worse lately. I shined a light down in the pads and they still look good, still loads of wear left on them.

If it's bad then you need to take the caliper off and clean it out. There may be some dirt or excessive brake dust in there.

Thanks again. That sounds like the way I'll probably end up going if the bleed doesn't work. I have two guys I work with for two more weeks (Navy transfer coming up), one is a mech at a Ducati dealer and the other races crotch rockets on the weekends with the mech. Both said the same about the calipers.
