Increasing Compression in 08 R* 1 Year, 6 Months ago
I joined some time ago, finally got a pic of my 08 Silverado S loaded. I added a K&N BAK, Cobra LS exhaust, a Cobra fi2000 processor (removing this soon--decreased MPG and no noticeable change thanks to the stock computer compensations)and alot of chrome bolt-ons.

My question for the forum techies is if and how to increase cylinder compression. I've considered swapping the pistons and porting the heads, along with the valve/spring swap and cams. Anyone had success?

Thanks in advance.

Hambon,

Can't help you with you high compression piston question but some of the other "Old Pro's" here can. Why do you want to increase compression?
Yamaha Speedstar offers various kits to increase horsepower and torque. Speedstar The Old Pro's will undoubtedly offer alterantive suggestions.

Good luck with whatever you choose?

They run total about $1200 - 1500. Why do you want to do all that my 07 clock 130 on the dyno last time I had it run. These bikes are cruisers and never get mine over 90.

i have done the wisco 10.5:1 pistons and porting polishing and decking the heads, along with the bak, pipes, ported intake and dynatek 3000.my star is an 02 1600 and i am getting 106.97 footpounds of torq. now i need a h.o starter since the stock starter has a hard time and the the clutch spring plate since the extra power causes slipping of the weak springs when i get on it. keep this in mind

Thanks for the input everyone. I was concerned that higher compression would effect cluthch pressure, hadn't thought about the starter needing more juice.

As for being faster--yeah, that chrome helps

The Speedstar competition upgrades are what I was thinking about, but as someone pointed out; it's a cruiser not a crusher. ALthough alot of my HD enthusiast friends insist they can still out run me. We all know the answer to that one.

I'll keep mulling it all o0ver and talking to the Yamaha service techs, as well as anxiously listening to all those who replied to my thread.

Thanks again.

You'd be surprised what you can do without increasing the compression ratio. The right cams, intake and exhaust, and head work can work wonders with the stock engine. Also, it's amazing how much horsepower can be added by something as simple as ensuring that the rings are set to the minimum gap.

I've got a blueprinting book that shows a test where a Chevy 350 gained 30hp just from changing the ring gap from 0.024" to 0.016". The biggest bang for the buck might be a gapless top ring if they can make one for the Road Star.

From what I've read, HC pistons bring their own added problems - heat, harder starting, premium fuel, etc.
