Problems after maintenance job at Yamaha dealer 6 Years, 8 Months ago
When I got my Bike back from the dealer after a large maintenance job including adjusting valves, the bike sounded more "hard". It was very slow ideling and when the engine was really warm it was ideling too fast.
Previously I equipped my bike with V&H, hypercharger, Dynojet and it was going really good.
But now the bike is slow (as before with stock exhaust, filter etc.). It hardly uses any gasoline (compared with how it was before this maintenance job).
Is the bike going too lean or have they (the dealer) done anything wrong adjusting the valves or what?

I am going back to complain to the dealer about this changes but would be glad to have some argument or at least understanding whats wrong with my bike.

Hej Johnny,

What do you mean by "large maintenance job"? Did they also 'adjust' or re-jet the carb?

If the valves are not adjust correctly you will lose some power; you would also probably notice more 'noise' in the top end.

With the choke (enricher) on, normally the bike idles slower when cold and speeds up as it warms up. When warm and with the choke off, the bike revs about 900 rpm; doesn't lope but doesn't 'run' fast.

No I ment the yearly service after 20.000 km. At that maintance job they usually adjust the valves. Sorry, I am not so good at english.
The dealer claim they haven´t done anything to the carb settings.
But after only 300 km after this 20.000 km service, the new sparkplugs were all black. The dealer says they have done nothing wrong and says everything is a result of me using Dynojet carb needles.
They said to me that my bike should be much better with yamaha orginal carb needles.
But when I left my beloved bike it did run real good. And now it runs real slow with a harder noise. As if I used a one step higher gear than before all the time. (sigh)

Your English is better than my Swedish

If all they did was oil and filter, plugs (?) and check the valves, then it's quite possible that the servicing and poor performance are a coincidence. As you intend, I would certainly take it back to the dealer, and quickly!

I don't see why it would use less gas. If anything poor performance usually translates into poor gas mileage.

If they changed the plugs then maybe the wrong plugs or they are not gapped correctly.

I know the 04-05's have some issues regarding running rich and problems with valves getting carbon up. If you have replaced it with a Dynojet then you may be running too rich and that may also be why the plugs are black so soon. But I'd get your current problem resolved first.

You'll have to fly me over to take a look.

Good luck with the dealer.

Now I feel like a real fool. I had my bike to a Dynojetcenter who tested my bike and found out that it was in perfect condition.
I was stunned. But all my problems? said I. That was just a result of me having just equipped my bike with windwhippers. They directed the air under my hypercharger so my bike didnt get the air that it needed. I thought that the talk about ram-air in hyperchargers were just talk.
But the sound from my engine? Said I.
That is ordinary enginesound that was reflected from engine via windwhippers straight up to my ears. When I took of my windwhippers my bike was back in shape again.
I bought a big cake to my dealer after this

Even if the "ram effect" is minimal on the HC, it can only get air from one direction unlike a lot of other units. That's one for the data banks allright!

I'm wondering what wind whippers are? I have the frilly leather on my brake/clutch and they whip me when the wind gets to whipping them. I know that isn't what your talking about. Maybe I will do a google search, not unless ya'll see this first.

Horizontal wind deflectors. Here you go .... http://www.nopork.com/shop_product.asp?id=WW245

How's the 'frilly' seat?

Re:Problems after maintenance job at Yamaha dealer 6 Years, 6 Months ago
Yesterday I went to another Yamaha dealer and he said he never dealt with the sticky valve thing but they did have a bike that had to much oil in it and it acted the same way. He showed me a bulletin the Yamaha had out on this problem especially with 2004 & 05’s. It seems that the 2004 & 5’s need less oil .
Now back to why I wrote about the bike going to the shop for the pipes, they also did the oil change at this time and they have done every oil change since. Stupid me right.
The problem is that the manual says 5qts. of oil and that’s seems to be about a quart to much. I know there’s a discussion here about how to change oil and they seem right. It goes run the bike til hot, about a couple of miles then let the bike cool down for about 15 min. then check level (my was about a little more than a quart heavy).Seems the oil is getting pumped into the back cylinder because of the vent hose off of the oil tank. This happens more when cold because oil is thicker and doesn’t flow as good, thus backing up in the rear head and flooding the valves, fouling the plugs, running uneven, backfiring, causing it to act like valves are sticking and carbon on plugs. It does all of this when cold because the thicker oil doesn’t flow back through the head. On a hot day it doesn’t seem to act up thus the thinner oil flows through head better.
Hope this helps some of you. I know that I have fought this for a year now and haven’t ridden much because of it but now maybe there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Good Luck,
Tisley
