GL5 = GL4??? 1 Year, 6 Months ago
Just got done changing the oil with the Mobile 1 20w50 V twin. Couldn't find Mobile one gear oil but found Castrol Syntec 75W90 (full synthetic). After draining the old stuff I reread the bottle and find this is GL5 not GL4. Can't find anywhere to confirm it's backward compatible. Any suggestions from you pros out there?? This is the 600 mile service and want to go all synthetic at the same time.

Thanks

Wyvern:

The article provided in Pop Rivet's link suggests that GL-5 gear lube is backwards compatible to GL-4. I disagree. It is not AUTOMATICALLY backwards compatible. Unless the packaging or the manufacturer states that its GL-5 gear lube is backward compatible to GL-4, I would not use it.

Most Roadies use Mobil 1 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube for their transfer cases. Mobil 1's web-site specfically states that its GL-5 75W-90 synthetic gear lube is compatible for use in vehicles requiring a GL-4 spec:

My $.02.

I changed mine last week and put in the AmsOil full synthetic. (They didn't stock any GL4 synthetic gear lube) I asked the service manager at the dealership where I got it and he said that it would not be a problem at all. I also asked my neighbor who has been wrenching cars for over 30 years and he also said that it should not be a problem.

Just passing on what I've been told.........

As with automotive oil vs motorcycle oil, there seems to be much confusion regarding GL-4 vs GL-5 spec. I found this on the Redline site on gear oil info.

The extreme pressure chemistry used in many gear oils can be corrosive to brass and bronze used in synchronizers and bushings. .... A corrosive gear oil can shorten synchronizer life by half and can also contribute to rust problems.

GL-4 is recommended for our bike and GL-5 is not needed for our tranfer gears. GL-5 is required for limited slip differentials.

I'd stick with GL-4 unless you can't find it. The new standard is not necassary an improvement for our application.

I will admit to making the same mistake on this issue. I bought a GL-5 gear oil and found out the day after I changed the transfer case fluid that it is a problem. I ended up buying RedLine manual tranny fluid, which is a 70w80 GL-4 gear oil, because it was the only synthetic GL-4 I could find. I don't even think Yamaha sells a gear oil for it, so what do they use if they service it for you????

BlkCherryBomb:

Exactly our point: Don't let the dealer service it!

The Mobil 1 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube conforms to GL-5 spec, but the Product Data Sheet on their web-site states that it is okay for use in applications requiring a GL-4 spec.

Re:GL5 = GL4??? 1 Year, 6 Months ago
I sent them an eamail asking if their GL5 was backwards comaptible with GL4. Sounds like they don't recommend it. Doc was right on about the yellow metals.

These differences are mainly distinguished by the level of active additives employed in the product. Different applications require different additive levels and different component materials can be affected by the levels of additives present in the lubricant.

Having said that GL-4 and GL-5 gear oils are not compatible and manufacturer's recommendations should be adhered to. They cannot meet the same specifications and the product performance and tests are different.

Typically, a GL-5 gear oil will have about 2 times the active additive level of a GL-4 product. This additional additive can cause problems with yellow metals like brass or bronze.

Good to have it verified.

From what I've been able to find, GL-5 is not a replacement for GL-4.

Doc,

Here's what I'm reading:

From Mobil 1 web site....."Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-90 can also be used in rear axles where API Service GL-4 lubricant is recommended"

From AmsOil web site....." Can also be used rear axles where API Service GL-4 lubricant is recommended." (80W-90 gear lube)

Would either of these be OK?

What are you running in yours?

Thanks
