check engine lite on 4 Years, 10 Months ago
|
|
Hi folks, new guy here.... did a little lookin around before I joined and found some posts here that may help my problem.. I just bought a 2003 roadstar and it is in beautiful condition and runs very well, almost too well. but it has a problem.. the engine light is on.. previous owner has added cobra pipes, a mikuni 45mm carb and a dyna 3000. also the ais is gone... the paper work that he gave me showed that the new carb doesn't use the TPS and that it would make the light come on unless a performance ignition module is used also. I would assume the 3000 is a performance module. my question to you folks is Do I need to set one of the little switches to a certain position on the module to make the lite go off..I don't have any paperwork on the module..thanks in advance for any help you could give me.. I plan on hanging around here for a long time...

Welcome to the clinic Flashback.
Now that the pleasantries are over with, from all I've read the engine light will come on if the TPS is disconnected. I'm not sure if it will go off with a different ignition module, maybe someone else will chime in that knows better than me. Take that with a grain of salt since I am a mechanical moron, however, I do read and learn from every post here and at the RSR site on Delphi so once in a while I am right.

Post edited by: RoadieFF, at: 2007/07/15 13:48

WOW, you folks are quick, thanks for the warm welcome . One other thing I forgot to mention is the bike also has an aftermarket air filter and manifold. I think it is called a "hypercharger". anyway it kinda looks like a ram air thing that you sometimes see on cars with a blower. I don't think it would effect the engine lite but I'm in the dark here and have a lot to learn.. I know on cars that I have had it is usually some smog divice or sensor that causes the lite to come on..

Well I may have answered my own question.. it appears that I have the stock ignition module and a device called a dynojet rev master what ever that is sorry for runnin my mouth before I had the facts.. I just knew it was dyno something and assumed it was the ignition module..guess I will need to get a new module if I want the lite to go out...

Well guys, I have almost the same setup as in question here, with no problems: Hypercharger, Yamaha Speedstar ignition module, 3" Hard Krome pipes, jet kit, etc. Bike runs close high 40's for mpg, runs like a dream, and I have never had my engine light come on, although maybe it is due to the fact that I have a Yamaha module vs. someone elses? Good luck - Rod.

the bigger carb probably lets in a lot of air, but without high compression pistons and cams, would be easier to set up with the stock carb, the TPS will turn the light on and probaly not effect anything from running properly, have no knowledge on how to turn it off, tried to call the guy I knew at the stealer, he quit doesn't want to work weekends anymore.

I sure welcome all this input, as I mentioned in the other post I put up, I have only had the bike 2 days and am just getting the feel of it so I haven't really cranked it on yet or compared it to anyone else's as far as performance goes. but it does run very well.. from all info so far, it seems that the ignition module will need to be changed to put out the lite. I haven't had a chance yet to look at the online manual that one of you guys mentioned. I would like to see what else can trigger the lite besides the TPS. the lite doesn't bother me too much except that if I had a failure in another system that is connected to the lite I wouldn't know it..

If the light bothers you ..... plug the TPS back in and tape it to the backbone.
The TPS light only lights up for a 'defective' TPS.

Well Doc, ya really got me cornfused now.. Are you sayin that the little lite with the picture of an engine below it is just for the TPS? when you say plug it back in and tape it to the backbone do you mean basicly ground it out to the frame and the lite will go out?
