i have seen some boss shift linkages for a hd at the swap meets. i wonder if the shift linkage is long enough if i could use it for the road star, even if that means re-tapping the ends

When I installed the extender brackets on mine, I had no issues with the shift rod at all.

I had the same problem when I installed my floor board extensions. What worked for me was to rotate the rear attachment point of the linkage forward a couple of degrees (this is the piece with the teeth-like grooves) and rotate the forward attachment point a couple of degrees (again the piece with the teeth-like grooves), getting the two as close to parallel as possible, keeping the linkage length about the same as it was. After finding the right teeth grooves it worked perfectly. If that was confusing let me know and I'll snap some pics.

Yamigo,

I kind of did the same thing when I first moved the boards. But it didn't allow me to put the foot shift where I needed it. Maybe I just didn't "fiddle" with it enough.

While I'm at it, does anyone have a stock shift rod laying around they would like to sell? Since I was anxious, got carried away, and ground a small area on mine to accommodate running too close to the bolt on the side case.

It does take some fiddling. Here is how mine worked out. If the pictures don't work bear with me til I figure it out.

Front of linkage. You can rotate the shifter up or down by removing the linkage off the toothed spline in the front and then push it back on when you get your shifter in the right spot.
